XP-Pro, or XP-Pro....?

    Hi all,

I have my old hard drive installed in a newer computer as slave. Both drives run XP-Pro. When computer comes on there is first a black DOS screen to choose which operating system I want to use, with 2 choices: Windows XP-Pro, or Windows XP-Pro?

Because that's such a mind-boggling difficult decision for me to make when I fire the thing up early in the morning before coffee, how do I eliminate that screen?

Second question: XP-Pro was already loaded on the master drive when I got computer, but it appears and handles slightly different from my old drive's XP-Pro O/S: are there different versions of XP-Pro? My old drive was XP-Pro SP1 to SP2 and then SP3. The newer master drive shows XP-Pro SP3, don't see anything about SP1 & SP2. Make a difference?

    THANKS!!

Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
Under System Startup, click Edit. This will open boot.ini file in Notepad.
Copy all content, and post it in your next reply.

    Hi Broni,

Man, that stuff scares the Dickens outta me! Here 'tis:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    Open boot.ini one more time.
    Delete last line:
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
    Go File>Save
    Restart computer.

Try the button in the image attached.

    In the msconfig

    Start > run > msconfig

Can't translate correctly but it fixes the Boot start options only leaving the OS that works.

Thanks, guys! I suspected there might be a simple answer, for somebody who actually knows what they're doing.

Itmortiz, I'll try this but don't know how well it will come out, lots of years since I tried writing espanol: 'Gracias! Lo ciento mucho, mi amigo, no hablamos Espanol y comprehende los direciones por a blasted gringo' or something like that, but I appreciate it!

Reminds me of an old joke I heard somewhere in Europe:

"What do you call somebody who speaks 3 languages? Trilingual.
What do you call somebody who speaks 2 languages? Bilingual.
What do you call somebody who speaks only one language? American..."

We live in a much smaller world in some ways.... Thanks again!

    Ha haaa! Thanks, Itmortiz! :)

It was easiest & safest for me to follow Broni's suggestion because it seemed easier to get there, direct & simple, through msconfig.

I have no doubt your method would have worked, just couldn't read & recognize what the page said.

Too bad I didn't study harder on Castillian, but that was always defeated when any actual practice & conversation in the States was with folks from Mexico, who spoke 5,000 different mixed dialects, not even remotely similar!

    Thanks again, guys!

Yeah, good job by you guy's guidance!!

BTW Itmortiz, just to let you know: I had read 6 or more of your posts before I ever realized your address, and the fact that you were not another English speaking American posting here! That's amazing you learned English from a video game, speaking of a 'Good job'!!

Well stay at it buddy, it's working great so far! I always admire a person willing to work for something. English is a very difficult language to learn, especially grammar, and I think you've done very well!

Having read through this thread it appears that you have "fixed" the boot menu, so that it does not appear any more.

However, most likely you have still 2 Windows version installed (in two different partitions). Of course you will see only the first Windows version from now, but if you ever run short of disk space, perhaps you should get rid of the 2nd Windows installation.

Yes indeed, two copies of XP Pro. I started another thread asking about cleaning up my second drive. I'm not sure what I can safely remove, or in some cases, how to remove garbage.

I need to make a backup/restore CD. Also I only have the OEM copy of XP Pro from the computer that once used the slave as its master. At least I think it's the OEM version, not sure. So I thought it's maybe safer to leave the O/S fully installed on second drive as a further backup?
