Ok so my pc had a problem and im using the secret repait thing that looks just like a regular setup, the problem is that now in that setup ive run into the asms file not found thing. Ive tried the the microsoft solution for NTFS hard drives but for somereason the upper and lower class things its talking about dont exist...and ofcourse none of the FAT32 ones work

Well i had a pc problem saying that a certain file could not be found, and then i found a solution to that problem. That solution was the secretive repair setup on the XP Pro cd, where it repairs windows XP while keeping all of your files and programs. Now during this setup, which looks like a normal setup, i run into the the dialog that pops up at the setting up XP part that says:
    Files Needed
The file 'asms' on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD is needed.
Type the path where the file is located and then click OK.

Except for the fact that i had my computer custom made and it came with only 1 disc, XP Professional. It's a legit copy, but when i try microsoft's solutions for a NTFS harddrive, which my hard drive is, in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Test\ControlSet1\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} there are no upper or lower registry keys. The XP Pro disk is in perfect condition, no scratches or and deformity. Is there any other information i can provide that would be helpful? I've spent like a total of 15 hours trying to solve this pc problem and nothing

What you are doing is called a repair install. There is nothing secretive about it. It is a perfectly legitmate and respectable operation.

However you must use a CD with the same service pack of windows as the installation you are trying to repair.

If your system is a few years old perhaps the Windows Disk that came with it is only service pack 1 or even none. What does it say on it? You will have updated your system to SP2 during the normal update process.

    Options are

    1) Borrow a friend's XPpro SP2 disk. Just use your windows key from the side of your pc.

2.) Create a slipstreamed XPpro disk yourself by downloading SP2 (and SP! if needed) and copying your XPpro disk plus the service packs to a new CD.

3.) Recovering any data from your hard drive by taking it out of your pc and connecting it as a slave to a friend's. Then doing a normal clean install from your XP CD. Then doing the updates to Windows.

What is the exact name of the file required?

  7. aaron00lee

it literally says: 'The file 'asms' on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD is needed.' if doesnt say like asms.whosuibd or whatever, it just says asms. ive put that cd into the computer im on now and searched for a file or filetype asms but there is no such file or filetype, there is a folder called ASMS but no file called asms.

Perhaps the registry key is not the one that refers to your CD drive, Do you have more than 1?

A repair install seems a rather drastic solution to a missing file?

If you can still boot to your original windows can you not simply run the system file checker or extract it from the XP CD?

If not you don't need anothr partition to install a second copy of windows. Just do a clean install, but decline the format option and install to another folder, say twindows.
Setup will create a new boot.ini to point to this new install and you can operate from there to fix your original.

Incidentally Microsoft say run regedit from the new installation but load the old registry hive. I had always understood that you need to use regedit32 for this purpose.

    No as in

Locate and then click the following key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Test\ControlSet1\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

If you have more than one CD is this the correct registry key for the one you are using?

You are obviously more experienced and knowledgeable than your first post suggested, not many would know to get to the command prompt during setup.

It may be necessary to create the upper and lower filters keys (as Dwords) for the CD and set values of zero. I haven't tried this but I have never had this exact problem.

Incidentally the upper and lower filters are used by cd writing programs to redirect the CD data stream to some manufacturers or program subroutine.

I still wonder if it is possible to fix your original problem. Did you try the recovery console?

You windows CD may be legitmate but Microsoft say that some OEM versions do not have the requisite files!

Well you now have all the possible repair options.

Maybe just copy your ASMS folder from the I386 folder and when it asks you where it is, just point to it on your HD. I hope that works for you. This came via someone else so I may have screwed it up.

This is possible using the recovery console.

The key in question is certainly the one for CD classes.

I have uploaded three screen shots of the registry at this key. The first two are from XP, the third from W2k.

You may be able to spot something by comparison with yours.
