... which is not, as I understand it, the same thing.

I read that the computer should wake up in response to a mouse movement or a key press on the keyboard.

Is that correct? If so, will the shortcoming be in Windows or in the computer?

In the Power Options Properties box, make sure Hibernation is disabled (see attached).

    Hibernation is disabled.

Not always. If the keyboard and mouse are both connected by USB and the computer is set to disable USB ports to save power then the keyboard or mouse movement will NOT wake up the computer.

There's nothing in the Power Schemes which says anything about USB ports.

    Where is the setting?

Thank you plodr, I've done that.

The results I get are not what I expected.

I have tried a Power Scheme which switches the monitor off after 1 minute, disc off never and standby after 2 minutes.

The monitor goes off, but comes on again after a few seconds. The disc activity l.e.d. flashes every second.

As the monitor comes on agaion I must assume that the computer isn't sleeping, otherwise the monitor wouldn't be driven.

Another Scheme which swtches off the monitor after 1 minute, the disc off after 3 minutes (the minimum setting) and standby after 5 (the mimimum setting now that the disc is set to go off).

The monitor goes off only briefly again, the disc activity l.e.d. continues to flash every second. Which is no diffeent from the first Scheme.

Is there anything else I can try?

List what you've done. You should only be doing things with USB controllers which has nothing to do with a VGA connected monitor.

I have unticked the boxes which allow the computer to turn off each of the associated USB root hubs - as per the link which you gave me.

What else do I need to do?

These are the settings associated with all the USB Root Hubs:

The upper box was originally ticked. I unticked it. The lower box, to allow the device to bring the computer out of standby is greyed out.

If the computer was in standby I would expect its l.e.d. power indicator to be lit. It isn't, and the computer doesn't wake up when the mouse is moved or a key is pressed.
