XP Pro thinks it's Media Center Edition

Okay, funny problem. I'm working on a computer that is continuously rebooting just before it gets to the desktop. I wanted to disable automatic restart on error (or whatever it is) so I could actually read the blue screen error message. So I'm booting the computer, hit F8, arrow down to the proper selection, hit enter, then when it asks me what windows installation I want to turn off automatic restart for. The only option is Windows Media Center Edition. THIS IS AN XP PRO INSTALL! I've never even touched a MCE disc in my life! I have no idea how this could get boggled... well okay. It's a Microsoft product-- I have SOME idea.

Reformatting IS an option, but I've been working on getting this thing fixed on and off for about two weeks. I'd rather not have to figure out a way to do a back up, but if I have to, I have to.

    Any thought, ideas, suggestions?

If you don't mind me asking, was the original install disc "legitimate"?

Yup. I can't remember if it was a retail version or a college license, but it was legit.

Why? Would it make any difference if it were illegal?

What's worse-- or more confusing-- is that this has been installed for 6 months with no problem. Then all of a sudden... bah.

Well, an illegitimite copy could possibly have MCE on it instead of Pro. You never really know with pirate discs.

But anyway, if it were me I'd reformat to save myself the hassle. But there might be a better cure :)

MCE v. 2003 and 2004 WERE XP Pro w/ extra toys. I'm confused as to what the problem is?

    What does System properties say?

At the moment I can't get to the system properties to find out. Can't boot into safe mode, vga mode, normal mode...

LOL. The problem is that I can't boot into the operating system!

I installed a legit copy of windows XP pro. I realize MCE is simply XP pro with some goodies. I was trained to sell it. The problem is that I can't turn off "automatic restart on error" OR even attempt to boot into VGA mode because the only option it allows is Windows MCE and I need the option of XP SP2. I'm so getting my girlfriend a mac.

What you are seeing is the boot.ini information. It is most likely irrelevant to your problem. It is merely text (with some boot switches thrown in).

So the question is, WHAT happens when you choose MCE after disabling automatic restart?
