have a spacewalker MB 700MHZ< 375 meg ram, 56K modem, 20 gig HD ( no cable available) I reformatted my HD after 2 years with XP Pro, and other systems, and I have gotten all the updates, and SP2 service disk,,

computer when online is slower than death,, I use People PC and my other computer with Win 2000 runs much better, with Firefox or IE,,

I am thinking of formatting again and going back to 98se or ME,

I dont know where to look, I kept everything off this harddrive ( extra programs) until this is fixed, I run Giant spyware and Nortons antivirus.

First time I ran SP2 my modem wouldnt come online,, I reloaded my ISP and still nothing so got the wild hair and reformatted,,(also tried uninstalling SP2)

try using a free scanner such as avast or avg, both available from MG downloads. these scanners pick up stuff that norton doesn't.

some reason I dont think it is a virus problem,, Guy at work loaded SP2 on two of his computers and had problems and ended up removing it and then reloading XP again over the top of the already installed XP,, so I tried that this AM and it came back with start from boot up, installation had not completed before ( I used computer for a week trying to fix it)

after reload it still is slow and will say Page cannot be found but if I hit BACK and try again it finds it,

I think I will reformat back to 98se where i had minimal problems,

I saw this post and thought I might be of some help. I was running XP pro with SP1A when I decided to download SP2.....needless to say it was ALL down hill from there!. I had the same problems, my computer ran super slow, locked up from time to time and would even restart itself...go figure. The bad thing was that I could not go from SP2 back to SP1A. So this is how I worked around the problem, I grabbed my XP Home edition from my laptop and downloaded it on my PC, once I was through with that ordeal it would let me download my XP Pro with the SP1A. Just to let you know I was grasping at straws but it worked!. I hope you fix your computer, I know how frustrating it is!. My machine is for A/V editing and it literally took almost a week and a half to get it back to normal so I know what you are going through! good luck and keep us posted.
