Everything will start before i connect. And after several minutes the programs will start. I can see the processes in sysmon (if I start it before connect else it wont start) but no program. I'm not sure when it started exactly, it was after sp2 upgrade. i beleive im clean of spyware,i update and run spybot and Antivir. i have watched the processes in sysmon after connecting to see if anything is hogging processoror memory, dont see anything unusual. I have All xp updates to date. Sys info is attached. Thanks!

To make sure I'm on the same page, you're having an issue where programs are slow to start while you're online using dial up internet, but the programs start fine when you're not online, correct?

What dialup service are you using? What programs are you trying to open? Are there specific programs that open slow, or is it just a few specific programs? Are you having any other system problems, connected to the internet or not connected? Have you done basic maintenance such as scan disk, defrag, etc? When you go to start up a program and it's "waiting" if you hit cntrl-alt-del is there one process hogging all the resources?

Have you followed all of the directions in the malware forum? Even if you think you're clean, it's a good thing to do just to rule out malware as the culprit. I've seen some people swear up and down their systems were clean, only to discover they were using Kazaa or something like that, not realizing what it did to their system.

    Here's how it goes

I connect (at&t worldnet) using windows basic dialup connection.

I then try to start IE, it doesnt start. shortcut to "My computer" will start and I can browse files ect. Ctrl-alt Del will not start sysmon. Other than MY computer or My documents or Recyle Bin, nothing else will launch. Not from the start menu or from a shortcut. Now several minutes will pass (3-5) and all of the programs I tried to start will open at the same time (as if a timer when off). If i open sysmon before I connect to dialup I can see all the processes start when I try to start a program but they wont actually start.

I have clean bill from both spybot and adaware, I run Antivir and all are up to date.

Try doing a "Repair" of XP. Are there any errors in Admin Tools under Events?

by repair do you mean "using system restore"?

Yes. Make sure you back up your important documents first. Also when you dial out, does your System Resources shoot up to 100% in Task Manager?

I dont really want to do a system restore since im not really sure how far back to go (pre sp2), is there another option?

  9. I was reading the sysinfo file and i wonder if the paging file has somthing to do with it. Maybe try blowing that up...? I dunno what would be a recommended size for xp but im sure someone does. I have windows 2000 and my paging file is 288MB maybe by blowing that up it may solve the problem.

I noticed that you have 512 ram physical, but approx. 100~ available.

My recommendation is the following. As a test only.

Click START, then RUN, then type in: msconfig (press enter).

    Click Selective Startup.

    Uncheck Load startup Items.

Press OK. Then yes, to reboot.

Try dialing out again, do you STILL have the same issues?

@The_new_tech_guy: The page file is set at 1.2 GB. Not so sure that an increase will work out. But, I think that some program is hogging the initial bandwidth as soon as an initial internet connection is established.

  11. Oh i did not see that! My mistake sorry about that. I figure somthing is hogging recources too. Not sure what. Paper, when you connect to the internet open task manager and watch your cpu. I have a feeling that is just having a long spike. To open task manager just open it before you connect and watch your cpu levels.
