XP Recognizing CD/DVD Incorrectly

Noticed this many many months ago on this HP DC7700. XP recognizes the system standard CD/DVD as a RW, but it's only a reader. I have an external burner that is recognized as a CD/DVD RAM.

Tonight downloaded Hiren's ToolCD to burn to disk, hoping it would work with an external DVD burner I have. Downloaded and extracted the .iso and managed to burn it after a few tries using the burning software that came with Hiren's. This was the first thing I burned since way back in 2010, when I burned a copy of Ubuntu 10.? to disk to have an emergency OS. Hiren's is AMAZING by the way...:)

This has happened to me with XP on other machines, too, and research indicates it's common. Anyone developed an insight on what to do about XP misreading CD/DVD drives? I've never been able to find a solution.

    Hey, amigo...

Since I can remember, Claw. At first I think the DVDs showed up correctly. After that, a couple of times I went to test to see if I could burn with the drives labelled incorrectly, and it wouldn't work, but it didn't bother me, since I really wasn't looking to burn anything important at the time.

Like I said I recall this problem on a Dell GX270 I had a ways back, too, which had XP. I bought the external DVD/CD when I had the Dell...

    Hi AtlBO,

I don't know the answer to the identification problem either, I have had that problem for a fleeting time but it seemed to correct itself.

I'm just posting to suggest that you turn on private messaging. I wanted to message you about one of your threads. :)

sach2. Messaging seems to be on. I have had the same thing happen to me once or twice. I got a message that the message didn't go through. One time it did work...go figure :confused

I would show my e-mail on the profile page if I could figure out how.

Was going to message you, but it says messaging is set for only contacts on my account. I'm looking on Edit Options page, but I can't seem to find the switch for receiving messages from everyone. Any ideas where I should be looking to make the change?

At the top of any MG page hit the "User CP" link. Then look for "User Options" and select that.

Then look to compare it with mine. I never get the pop-up messages but do get the emails. I don't know what the blank text implies located directly under "Enable Private Messaging" where that checkbox is unticked but it doesn't seem to interfere with receiving PMs.

This isn't really important I just wanted to message about one thing that I didn't think was related to the thread I was reading and wanted to keep it simple.

Ah, I ticked the box with no text when I was looking over the settings. I think I believed it was for the setting just below...

Box unticked, so perhaps PMs will work now Sach2?

    :)
