Ccomputer will not go into safe mode. message it gives:

    missing
    windows/system32/config/system file

I booted from the XP CD and ran recovery console chkdsk \r command. It went through the whole recovery sequence but didn't help.

Any ideas how to restore the existing Xp without reinstalling it.

If I have to reinstall - how do I save the date from the disk?
