XP registry help - data recovery

I am helping a friend rebuild her pc. the old mobo went dead and we will have to reinstall and rebuild the system. i have her xp cd, and hard drive but not the coa key. this is a white box system that will not boot. can i pull the coa off of the hard drive before we format it?

BUT HERE IS THE CATCH --> her system wont boot anymore, so i popped her drive into box. i have access to her data, but i cannot find the coa key.

i know that the belarc advisor shows the key on an active system; in this case i need to find the key on a secondary hard drive... any ideas?

I didn't find anything here at MG that would recover the WIN XP CD Key from another HDD. However, I did find this ProduKey v1.01, it is freeware and can be used to recover a CD key from an installed OS on another HDD.

Always amazed to read of people who don't bother to keep packaging with password keys on it, or don't bother to write those product/activation keys somewhere safe.
