XP repair breaks Windows Updates

I figured a new thread on this was justified. Stay away from repairs boys and girls.

 

And if something breaks? Flatlining is not a good answer.

 

There's a couple of workarounds in that article but it obviously shouldn't have to be so. They are not exactly user friendly kludges. Another egg in the face for MS.

 

Not sure why this is receiving attention now, this has been an ongoing issue since the release of XP. A repair is merely an upgrade over the current OS, but its the version on the CD.

It has to do with updates and their registry entries not being removed by a repair, but the files themselves are. Really makes a mess of things.

Both OS X and nix have issues upgrading over themselves too.

 

Probably still receiving attention from newbies like me. :confused I've read the fix in the link, but unfortunately I don't know how to register the unregistered DLL files. Detailed instructions for a Silver Surfer would be much appreciated. BTW, what a brilliant site :drool Makes Microsoft help look silly :mad
