Hi this is my first post,

This forum is a great resource!

My parents xp pro pc was hit with the XP Restore malware a couple of days ago. I followed some advice on the web with no luck until I came across this forum and the thread by parsec1982, I believe it was #238955, dated 6-9-11.

I've completed the R&RMF regiment and believe the computer is back to normal. After I ran the Combofix which found and removed a rootkit things looked much better, files were unhidden, desktop icons returned, no warning messages or XP Restore window etc. XP Restore was still in the Start Menu -> Program list but I erased that. My concern is that there may be traces of the virus still on the computer.

I've attached all the logs from the ** oops ** looks like when I ran the clean up process the MGlogs and RRlogs were removed. Does that make sense? Well, these are all the logs I have left. MBRcheck would be the only one I performed after the removal. Combofix was during removal and the two Antispy and MBAM prior to removal. I'd appreciate if someone could analyze these and let me know if the rootkit is gone.

Let me know if I need to run any programs again to get more logs. Also what are good resources for learning how to read logs, I'd love to be able to do this myself.

Thanks again! You've already done a great deal toward resolving this problem. I was looking at a format and reinstall situation here until I found this forum. I can't thank you enough.

Re-run both MBAM and SAS and attach those logs. Also attach the C:\Combofix.txt if it still exists. Then please run MGtools. Save it to the root folder ( C:\MGTools.exe ). (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). Attach the resultant C:\MGLogs.zip

Thanks for your quick response. I'm currently running the scans and will get you the logs soon.

    Thanks

    OK,

Here are logs. Both MBAM and SAS found malicious files again. So, I think something is reinfecting the computer.

Also, this morning Firefox had its connection settings changed to proxy server with a 127.0.0.1 loopback address and port 63980. I switched it back to no proxy.

Let me know what you find in the logs and thanks again.

I am not seeing much in the way of malware, but let's do this:

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now copy just the bold text below to notepad (Do not include any space above the word REGEDIT). Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\~16441124

    Clean out this folder:
    C:\Documents and Settings\guy sapienza\Local Settings\temp\

    Use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    Java(TM) 6 Update 4
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7
    Java(TM) 6 Update 16
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

    Please run this:
    TDSSkiller - How to run

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * TDSSKiller log
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    TimW,

Thanks for getting back so fast I know you all are busy.

I've done as instructed. Logs are attached. One infected file was found and deleted in TDSSkiller.

I Have one concern and that is the text I was to copy and paste into the .reg file as well as the Hijackthis file contained strange boxes with 4 numbers inside:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - A3D70E-1895-11CF-8E15-001234567890} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - @A497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - (no file)

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - ¨¨8-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - (no file)

    &

    REGEDIT4

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\""8-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7}]

Was that normal? I've never seen that before and they did not show up in my smartphone browser, only on the desktop.

Besides that as far as I can tell things are working well. I will now rerun MBAM and SAS and see if anything comes up.

Should I not be updating Java? You had me remove a variety of updates. I seem to have requests to do so weekly if not daily.

Let me know what you think and thanks for all the help.

Looks good. Just clean out these folders:
    C:\Documents and Settings\guy sapienza\Local Settings\temp\
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0

    TimW,

Thanks for all the help. I believe we may have saved this computer. I purchased licenses for both SAS and MBAM and have been running scans daily. A few suspicious files keep popping but I'll keep an eye on it and see how it behaves. It may be in the long run I go ahead and format and reinstall any way as I still feel like there is aberrant behavior eg mshome.net seems to be scanning a large amount of ports. It seems to be coming from the router. I'm looking into it currently.

But a gain thanks for all you time and help I wouldn't have gotten this far without you.

You are most welcome. You may want to reset your router, if you suspect that is the cause. ;)
