I cannot boot into safe mode. I shut down system reboot tap 8 click safe mode with network (also tried just safe mode) system starts displaying files and sticks. then I get a message saying sorry cannot boot into safe mode because of hardware or software installed? I am trying to doa complete virus scan because AVG has a virus on it every mornig when I come down to the computer. I would appreciate any help. Thought about going to MSCONFIG and changing the boot but afraid I might never get it to reboot normally

you should be ok changeing the boot.ini in msconfig to safeboot.

I haev found unless I've had a problem in which safemode options start themselves then F8 doesnt work for me *weird* so I use the option in msconfig to change the boot.ini and that has been ok for me and does allow you to change it back when finished.

Do you have Nero 6 burning software installed?

I haven't been able to boot in Safe Mode since updating to WinXP SP2... which required updating Nero 6. Just found out this week that Nero 6's InCD software has a fatal conflict with Windows XP/SP2. I uninstalled InCD (Not the rest of the Nero package), and safe mode is working again. Hopefully Nero gets that fixed soon.

Update: I just re-checked Nero's site, and their newest updates (6.3.1.25, dated mid-September) has cured the InCD problem. "Package 3" update is the InCD, if you don't want to download and update everything.

I do have Nero 6 but checked and it has all the latest updates. I checked incd and it is in fact version 4.3.00. Did that work for you to totally remove INCD? I had another darn virus this morning so says AVG. Dropper Delf that makes one every morning for the past two weeks when avg runs. Thats why I think I need to get into safe mode.

They couldn't fix it because of the msconfig setting?

Hmmm, not much to be said for the "experts", eh?

Bootcfg makes it easy to fix that problem.
