Hi, lately I've been having a bizarre problem shutting down windows. when I shut down I get a message that says " the application failed to initialize because the windows station is shutting down". I checked the task manager and there is nothing running. Ran all the spyware, virus and hijack this and they all report a clean computer. Is there a possibility that this is a hardware problem like memory or a motherboard. the computer was working flawlessly and now I'm also experiencing program hangs and cursor freezeups. I did make a change in that I transferred all the hardware to a new case and when I turned it on I was missing half my ram. It ran well with only the 512 but when I put a new 512 ram in that's when all the problems started even though there is 1024 again. Would appreciate any input.:(

    Hi

What is the reported application thats failing? if its not in the main message goto Error Reporting Logs and look their for an entry around the time of shutdown, and tell us what the application is as it will hold clues.

Also try your PC in Safe Mode, then shutdown, does it error?

In your move of PC hardware, you may have ended up with a file error or a plain old coincidence, could possibly be one of your startups not ending when PC is shutdown, so click start > run and type msconfig and untick all items in startups, reboot and shutdown, is error still there? if not then enter msconfig again and tick one item, reboot and shutdown, and keep doing this until you find the culprit, once found post its name.

Please do each of the above things in order as I posted them, so error message first, then safe mode and then the msconfig route, do tell us what happens at each stage as that error can link to any application so can be hard to trace.

thanks for the feeback halo. I have solved the error message problem on shutdown. It turns out that logitech setpoint 4.40 which I thought was better drivers was the culprit. I uninstalled it reinstalled the original drivers that came with the track ball and the computer is back to shutting down normally. I'm still having the occassional program hang which I didn't have before I changed cases. I'm pretty sure now that I messed up the motherboard somehow handling it. I have a new one and will put it in as soon as I get a cpu and ram. thanks:)
