    Hi all,

When SP2 was released, i wrote to microsoft to get hold of the CD as i was on dialup and 75mb wasn't probably the smartest thing I could do in a day!

So, the CD arrived by snail mail - this would be in 2004 I guess.

I have deliberately not installed it at all - mainly because many of the apps i must use had 'issues' with sp2, so i steered away from it.

I have a robust AV and Firewall software, so, i haven't been too concerned.

My app developer now advises that 'things should be ok' with sp2

As the SP1 end of life is approaching, i guess i need to 'do it', and i wonder if anyone could advise wether the CD i got all that time ago is still the 'correct' flavour...that i can simply go to it and install sp2 with?

    Many thanks for your help

    Hi!
I'd say your current CD will be just fine as it appears to be the same today as then.

    Hi Toni_1947,

Many thanks for your prompt reply.

I went to the MS site to ask this exact question, and apparently i need to have a maintenance contract to ask the question!!!

    Sheeesh!

I think the data you found is spot on - it looks like the same thing...certianly the timing looks right..

I will browse the CD and see if there is any s/w rev detials.

    Appreciate your help sincerely

As a heads up, I am unaware of any software incompatibility issues with SP2, on the other hand, I can point out countless security risks you are open to.

    Thanks Major!

There have been several revs to the IDEs I'm using, and it could well be that any issues have been dealt with now.

As for security flaws, i am not the slightest bit surprised - we don't MS to run out of things to fix now do we!!

As for my disc question, it is id'd as

    0704 Part No. X10-80291

If you have any thoughts on it, i would be most appreciative

I most definitely agree with the Major here on this matter.

This is because the Win XP Service Pack 2 incorporates numerous key security improvements which are designed to provide far better protection against hackers, viruses, and worms. SP2 also improves upon XP’s “manageability” of the security features in Windows XP and provides more and better information to help users make decisions that may potentially affect their security and privacy.

I remember reading somewhere a while back that computers which are running Windows XP Service Pack SP2 are 15 times less likely than those running XP or XP SP1 to be infected by some of the most dangerous forms of malware. Also a PC running Windows XP (without XP SP2) was far more likely to be infected with the most prevalent worms compared to a PC with XP SP2.

It is an accident waiting to happen when you run Win XP alone or only with SP1.

You are simply asking for trouble if you do. It is an open invitation to infecting you computer with every single virus | worm | trojan | malware (some of which are very dangerous) that has come out in-between the time that Windows XP was first released and SP2 was first introduced!

    Good Luck!

There have been many critical updates since SP2.

I suggest you visit the Windows Update site as soon as it's installed.

Hi BOLTS---relax---I, like you, waited to install SP2---fished around in the drawer to find the old CD---installed it expecting my sweet little 4 year old box to have a spaz attack---wonder of wonders---everything worked absolutely perfect---not a hitch---enjoy

    Thanks Avondude,

I will backup, ghost, copy again test, check for errors and copy again and then go for SP2! That should be of some comfort I guess!

Many thanks to you and the others for your support - it is sincerely appreciated.
