Hi- I am hoping someone can help me. My laptop is on the fritz. I was online earlier today searching for something on google. Then all of a sudden, my screen turns blue & I have un-readable type at the top left corner. I manually shutdown the computer & restart. It boots up & I thought it would be a good idea to shut down properly & restart again, so I try to shut down but the blue screen comes up again. This time it says:

A problem has been detected and windowns has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
    Technical information:
    ***STOP: 0x0000007f (0x0000008, 0x80042000, 0x0000000, 0x0000000)

And there's a little pink box on the bottom of the screen.

Everytime I manualy shutdown & reboot, it does the ususal things at the beginning, says windows is starting then the blue screen is back. Is my operating system fried? I do not have system restore enabled, or at least haven't enabled it since Dec. or so. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can remedy this before I take the computer somewhere to be looked at.

    Thanks,
    Loreen

Well, if you can't get past the start-up screen, the only thing I can think of to do would be a repair installation. Do you have the set-up disc? Do you know how to do that?

Does it boot in safe mode?

To check, please follow the steps below:

    1. Power on your computer
    2. Immediately begin tapping F8
    3. Keep doing so until you reach the Boot Options menu
    4. Select Safe Mode
    5. Press Enter

This will load windows using a minimal amount of drivers. This is useful for diagnosing a problem such as the one you're experiencing.

Is this similar to the error message?

    STOP 0x0000007f (0x00000008, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
    UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP

Are there any Symantec (Norton) products installed on the computer? If so, which one(s).

Well, I've tryed starting it again & The message...

We apologize but windows didn't start properly... etc. etc.

And it gave me the option to start in safe mode. It starts in safe mode gets completely booted up then it's reboots again & keeps rebooting, no longer giving me the option to start in safe mode.

A year ago, Dell tech support fried my operating system trying to fix a modem problem & the results I am having now are very similiar. They ended up replacing my hard drive.

    Any thoughts??

In response to the other reply:
My original error message didn't have anything about the Kernel thing. I saw on microsofts website about the error numbers I got, but it was all in technical speak that didn't make much sense (about Kernel modes). I don't have any Norton programs on my computer.....

Well if you can't get far enough into it to check out event logs or to turn off auto restart, then my only suggestion is to do a repair installation and see if that gets it up and running. Doubt it's the hard drive, could be mobo or power supply, though. Let us know.

Thanks for the info. To do a repair installation, would I F2 to boot through the CD-rom drive (with my XP repair CD in the cd-rom drive) & just follow the directions?? I've never done this before. I don't want to hurt it any further. Another stupid question, this shouldn't affect anything I have saved on my comuter (like word files, etc.) by doing this repair installation? Thanks again for your time!!!

    Check out this site http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/w2kmsgs/1123.asp
This is what I found there maybe it will help
    Error Message:
STOP: 0x00000007 (parameter, parameter, parameter, parameter) INVALID_SOFTWARE_INTERRUPT
    Explanation:
This is a Windows 2000 Executive character-mode STOP message. It indicates a level not within the software range.
    User Action:
If this is the first time you have booted after installing new hardware, remove the hardware and boot again. Check the Microsoft Hardware Compatibility List to verify that the hardware and its drivers are compatible with Windows 2000. For information about the hardware, contact the supplier. If you are installing Windows 2000 for the first time, check the Windows 2000 system requirements, including the amount of RAM and disk space required to load the operating system. Also, check the Hardware Compatibility List to verify that the system can run Windows 2000. If Windows 2000 is loaded and no new hardware has been installed, reboot with recovery options set to create a dump file. If the message continues to appear, select the Last Known Good option when you reboot. If there is no Last Known Good configuration, try using the Emergency Repair Disk. If you do not have an Emergency Repair Disk, contact your technical support group.

Hope that helps Best of Luck

Boot it up with the cd in the drive .....it will prompt if you want to boot from cd ..yes (hit enter) ... it will start installing files and get to the agreement page ...f8 to agree, then it will start looking for already installed os ... will find os and give the option to repair or install new ...choose "R" (repair).... will then do it's thing like it was doing a complete install, but will save all of your previous files and setting except for updates. (You are talking windows xp aren't you? ...forgot to ask).
After it is finished, and you can access your system, follow the suggestions in the malware section ...post reply so we know what you find.

Me again, Well I went to try & do a re-pair installation. I had to turn the computer on to get my CD-rom door to open. When I turned it on & put the CD in, the system turned on like normal as if nothing was wrong. There was a box that came up saying windows recovered from a fatal error did I want to send a report. So, I immediately transfered my important files to my jump drive & started to scan for viruses etc. I installed the new Microsoft Beta spyware (I had an old version). I scan it & it came up clean. Then I scaned with adawware. All can out clean. Then I scaned with Spybot. If had three errors during the scan. I click on the error after the scan complete (which said their were no threats to my system) and the comuter crashed again with the Blue screen message. It rebooted with, coming up to my desktop, again the same message about my computer recovering from a fatal error & there was a more information option, so I clicked on that to see what it said. It had some numbers on it, but again it crashed to a blue screen again. I haven't turned the computer on again since then. Should I try & reinstall XP or is there something else i should try since this new development. THANKS!!!

Well, I'd say that backing up, and doing a malware scan were wise first steps. I would recommend other maintenance as well, though. You might want to run CCleaner to clean out temp files, run a chkdsk /r, to find any bad sectors on your hard disk, maybe a defrag... You might want to consider running a registry cleaner such as Lexun RegScrub XP, but if you do, make sure you have a proper backup of the registry. Another thing to check would be hardware temperatures. Don't want that stuff overheating. Power consumption is another consideration: you'll crash if your system is drawing too much current

Or if you would prefer, since you DO have your files backed up, you could perform a clean installation of Windows, so you would have a known good copy of the software on your system. However, if your system is running this may not be necessary...personally, I like it, but alot of people can't be bothered.

Just post back if you have any questions!

    I have a few questions:

You posted to do a "run a chkdsk /r, to find any bad sectors on your hard disk"
What is this or how do I do this?? Is this a Disk Cleanup??

How do I back-up my registry?

And, how do I check hardware temperatures??

I lack knowledge on this stuff.
    Thanks!

Sorry, one more thing. I started my computer again as I was writing my last reply, and it seems OK again. So, I started the defrag. Which looked like it needed it quite bad because it was only on 4% defrag & was taking a very long time; it then crashed to the brue screen again with the pink box at the bottom. Ugg.

To check your temps and power supply, boot up and hit delete or F1 depending on mobo ... the first screen you see as it starts to boot up will briefly tell you what to hit to get into the bios. If you look at the power ratings, youi shouldn't see much fluxuation over 5% .... something rated for 5 volts and is showing spikes over 5.25 would indicate you need a new power supply ...12 volts souldn't go over 12.65.h
Also report back on the temperature ....
I had similar problems (when defraging) and it was a power supply issue.
So get everything you need off that computer ....
If the power and temps are OK, well discuss a repair install .... but not worth it if the motorboard (mobo) or power supply is going... post back
You can run a check disk by right clicking on the c drive ( in my computer) and chose properties and then tools .... check disc...select both repair options ...click OK out and restart computer.

Well, I tryed getting onto my desktop. Got as far as the Properties option in my computer & it crashed to the blue screen with little pink box. I booted up again hitting F1. I got the following message:

Windows could not start because file is missing or corrupt
    System32\drivers\isapnp.sys

    Then I'd get this message:

Memory write/read failure at 23FE0004, read FE11FE10 expecting FE11FE11 memory address line failure at 23FE0000 read FE11FE11 expecting 01010101
    Stike F1 or F2

If I hit delete instead of F1 I got same message about the corrupt file but it's a different file name:
    system32\drivers\pci.sys

Now it just keeps give me these same messages if I try yo just boot up all the way trying to get to my desktop. I decided to give it a break for awhile.

Sound like it's time to do a repair and hope ....Boot up with the cd in the cd drive, when uit promps, hit any key to boot from cd .... let it load files and ask for your agreement ...f8 to agree ... then it will look for previously installed os... when it find xp, it will give the option to repair (R) or new install .... hit "R" and let it run ...it will look like a new installation, but it will install leaving all your files and settings intact, except for updates.... let us know....
Then run all the stuff under "read this first" in the malware section ....
Then if still having problems, we'll need to get you into your bils setting and check temps and power supply...good luck.

So, I tryed to do a repair; it started to download files & then said the pcmcia.sys (I think, I forgot to write it down) was corrupt & wanted to start the computer again. I tryed again, it got further with loading files then my favorite blue screen is back & says:

The bios in this system is not fully ACPI compliant. Please contact your system vendor or visit.... for bios update. If you are unable to obtain an updared bios or the latest bios supplied by your vendor is not ACPI compliant, you can turn off ACPI mode during text mode set-up. To do this, simply press F& when you are prompted to install storage drivers. The system wwill not notify you that the F7 key was pressed - it will silently disable ACPI and allow you to continue your installation

    Tech info:
    and a bunch of number.

WHat does this mean? Did my BIOS get corrupted somehow? SHOuld I try the F7 business??

I have a bad feeling I'm going to be buying a new laptop soon :(

At this point (a little late in the game, but what the hey), it's time to ask, what exactly do you have? All the specs you can provide on exactly what type of laptop you are working with....please.

Let me add this, after doing a quick search:
"My Windows XP Pro PC gives a stop error that says the BIOS is not fully ACPI compliant then tells me to restart the computer.

Windows works fine after the restart. But when I turn on the computer the next time the stop error comes again. I find that some drivers are corrupt, needing re-installation.

No BIOS updates relating to this error were found on the internet. This motherboard has the Designed for Windows XP logo on it. I have no idea why it's stuffing up -- it never used to do it before.

Can you please help me, this problem is becoming a real pain in the neck.

    Neil Laxman, Brisbane, QLD

It's possible that the BIOS setup has been accidentally set to non ACPI mode. Check in the setup to ensure ACPI is enabled.

Other possible causes that have been pointed out are memory expansion, overclocking and incompatible driver software. Check out what you have recently installed or updated on your computer."

    And this:

"What BIOS Type and version do you have? What Motherboard or PC do you have?

My HP Pavilion 8903 (AP) also states that it was designed for Windows XP and even came preloaded with Windows XP. My motherboard is a TriGem Pinole or otherwise known as Fresno Cognac and my BIOS is Pheonix 3.07, 17/09/2001.

After receiving the ACPI Erros in my event log whilst troubleshooting unexplained attempted shutdowns (still unexplained) I looked into the BIOS on the Pheonix Technologies website. It is clearly stated by the original manufacturer to be non-compliant with ACPI. So why was it used in a machine that was sold as standard with Windows XP and claimed to be designed for Windows XP?

Lord knows and to date I have had no joy with HP but when I have the time I will approach them again about a BIOS fix. My next step in the meantime is to reload my machine again and disable ACPI at install as I cannot find any way to do it on an existing installation."

I have a dell inspiron 4100 running Windows XP (which came with the computer), I think I have 576 MB, 4Gb. I can't remember what else is on it. It's about 5 years old.

I tryed the repair for a third time & it seemed to work. I got to the windows XP recovery console. I had to google what to do next, but I figured it out & it restarted, but I got that screen about windows didn't start properly did I want to start in safe mode so I opted yes. It booted up OK in safe mode. I checked the Disk under My C drive it said it was OK. While I was googling I saw how to do the CHKDSK in the repair console, so I restarted the computer & it started the CD again. So, I just did another repair (What the heck at this point). Got to the Console prompts. I did a CHKDSK /p which indicated one or more errors on the volume (according to what I found fom the microsoft website I googled it should fix those errors, right?). Now I did a chkdsk /r , this took forever. But everything came back ok. I booted up again ok.

This morning. I tryed to boot up & it got to my screen saver, stayed there for a long time then it rebooted itself. The black screen about windows didn't start properly can up, I opted for safe mode, then it said the following file was missing or corrupt: system32\driver\pci.sys. It ask if I want to do a repair.

    Are you having fun yet?
Now do the installation, and DON'T go into the recovery console .... wait, follow the instructions from the microsoft link I gave you about the bios acpi thing, and wait until it asks if you want to "repair" the previously installed version of xp, or make a new installation. Do not go into the recovery console .....

  25. LDsparkle

    LDsparkle Private E-2

So, I tried the f7 thing. It got me to asking about repair or reinstallation. I chose repair & it brought me to the recovery console (this same thing happened yesterday, I didn't try to go there). So, I exited out & tryed again. This time I f7-ed during windows set-up, it started to load files then I got this message:

file setupdd.sys could not be loaded. The error code is 4 Setup could not continue. (Next take your laptop & throw it off the nearest bridge; I added this)

Also, I don't know if this is relevant, but I have to go into F2 to get it to boot from the cd-rom. I have to move it first in the boot up list for it to work. Also, when I first power on, I get that first windows screen that says hit F2 for set-up at the bottom, then I get this message screen:

Memory write/read failure at 23FE0024, read 11FE11FF expecting 11FE11FE. memory address line at 23FE0000, read 11FE11FE expecting 01010101 Strike F1 or F2. The is I hit F1 it'll finally boot up the reinstallation CD

Are you all sick of me yet???

  26. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

I'm starting to feel as lost as you .... did you try to do a complete, clean installation, yet? May be the only thing left to do. If you can get to that screen again, repair of new installation, try the new installation, format the disc and let it rip.... you can reload all the stuff you saved. If it will not install at all, we may have a hard drive or motherboard that is failing...post back (where have I heard that before?).

  27. LDsparkle

    LDsparkle Private E-2

Well, I finally had a chance to try & do a new installation. I can't get back to the XP screen with the reinstallation disc to do a new installation. I also tried my dell inspiron reinstall disc (for drivers & utilities). I'm not exactly sure what to do. It downloads a bunch of files, I think, then I get options for testing all devices, advance testing, Information & results, Program options, Device config., & MS DOS. I did a quick test & it found errors. Here's what some of it said:

System memory failure. Read 00000001h, expected oooooooo1h, expected 00000000h at address 0404701CH. Suspected memory component located on System board, at label DIMM_B

System memory - memory address line test- Fail
Suspected memory component located on system board, at label DIMM_B.

And it has this "system memory - line test - fail" a whole bunch of times.

So, is my memory bad? I added new memory about a year ago. I have a 64MB (orginal) & added a 512MB. If that is true, how do I know which is bad? Try one then the other??

  28. LDsparkle

    LDsparkle Private E-2

    Me again,

So, I tried taking out one of the memory modules but the computer didn't like that. So, I swap the two memory modules. I tried the quick test again & no errors came up, but when I booted up there are the usual problems. I tried to do another XP reinstall (just for fun). I finally got to the options of reinstalling or repairing. So, I tried a complete reinstall. I got this message after it started to try & reinstall:

The file iis.dll was not copied correctly

The file setup placed on your hard drive is not a valid windowns xp system image. If you are installing from a CD, there may be a problem with the XP cd.

    To retry hit enter

    Skip file hit esc.

    To quit hit f3.

I opted to retry & the lovely blue screen of death appeared that states:

A problem has been detected & windows had shut down.....
    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGES_AREA
If this is the first time you've seen......

    Tech info:
    ***STOP: 0x00000050 (0x8800001c, 0x00000000, 0x8086366d, 0x00000000

UGGGGG!!! I am at a loss.

looks like bad memory ..... pull your ram and try one stick at a time (remember xp need a minimum of 64mgs to run).

  30. LDsparkle

    LDsparkle Private E-2

When I tried one stick at a time it would boot up. Does my laptop require having 2 in there at a time???

  31. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

No, just gives better performance ... the question is whether any of it is bad.... on each stick, when it boots up, right click on my computer and tell us what it says as to amount of memory .... increments of 64, if not then it's probably bad.) So if you have one 64 and one 512 stick ...they may not be the same type , but one should report as 64 and the other report as 512 (poss. one or two bytes less to run your on-board video card. - but not a whole lot less.)
Also check that each stick is the same type ram.

my first question, now that I just wiped my computer clean & was able to get XP reinstalled clean, I put my jump drive in to get my important files off. I had copied My documents folder into my jump drive, which had all my important stuff, thinking I was OK to wipe anything out if need be. I just plugged into my laptop & when I open the my documents folder I had copied into the jumpdrive, it has what is currently in my new documents folder on the newly installed XP which is nothing!!! AHHH!!! What have I done?! Can you not copy your documents folder into a jump drive. I had checked it before I had disconnected to see if I had everything. I want to scream. I've just completely screwed myself, all my work files I think are gone now.

Also, since my newly installed XP, I'm still having strange things happen. One is, I noticed off the bat that all my previously installed programs (MS office, printers, etc) is gone, but things that I downloaded from the internet, like Mozilla, adaware, windows defender, etc. are still intact. Is that normal?

I also started to reinstall my programs. When I did this, everytime I restart, I wouls get a message saying windows recovered from a serious error. But now that has seemed to stop.

Also, I keep getting these little boxes that say Message Service at the top & then some thing about critical registry errors & a website to go to. It doesn't look legit to me. Here's the one I just got:
Message from microsoft to inform you about a virus detection on 5/12/2006 12:36am
Windows has detected critical registry errors.
Visit removed link to repair errors.

    Is this for real???

Can someone shoot me now, because I'm completely screwed with my work now.

LDSparkle the site you posted above is a spyware/malware sight!!!! I truly hope that you went to that sight with Firefox for the Activex in Explorer will just down load their garbage. Check out ALL sites first by typing news then the site addy(eg news windowsxpcleaner.com) in Google or your favorite search engine. As per your prior postings I gave you a sight that will tell you all about your error codes received and the places to go to address repairs. That sight again is http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.php for example your last error code was ***STOP: 0x00000050 (0x8800001c, 0x00000000, 0x8086366d, 0x00000000 and the info on that is

    0x00000050: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Requested data was not in memory. An invalid system memory address was referenced. Defective memory (including main memory, L2 RAM cache, video RAM) or incompatible software (including remote control and antivirus software) might cause this Stop message, as may other hardware problems (e.g., incorrect SCSI termination or a flawed PCI card). Use the General Troubleshooting of STOP Messages checklist above.
    • You receive a Stop 0x00000050 error on a Blue Screen {KB 894278} Win 2000, Win XP, Server 2003 (with concurrent 1003/System entry in Event Viewer: possible Rootkit spyware infestation)

    • “STOP 0x00000050” Error Message in Stac97.sys After You Upgrade Your Panasonic Toughbook to Win XP Service Pack 1 {KB 329832} Win XP SP1

I realize that this may come late, and may not help you much now, but just about all of us at MG have gone through the same type of problems. It is fashionable to blame it all on Mr. Gates company, but really the problem lies inside a machine that only sees 1’s and 0’s, no senses, or even logic, just “on” or “off”.
    Best of luck:eek:

If you have a messenger service popup that looks liek a normal windows error message then you have the Messenger Service running ( this is nothing to do with Instant Messenger as in MSN messenger, but a networking alert function thats been exploited ).

You either have to Install XP SP2 as by default it disables the messenger service or goto Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services and find the Messenger Service and STOP then in the startup type box set it to DISABLED > Apply.

or you can use this tool to stop the service http://www.majorgeeks.com/Shoot_The_Messenger_d3703.html

@BCGray.. cheers for the alert on the Malware link.

Could you clarify the re-installed process, asking because a complete wipe and reinstall would not have left you with any of those programs (adawrae, mozilla, etc. ..... a "repair installation" would have and would have left all your documents, as well).
As to the jump drive, are you saying you transfered them to the jump drive and then checked them as to being on the drive in the same computer? or a different computer?

Just a side note JDsparkle, in thinking about your situation last night, you may want to check-out your Jump Drive to see if it has Malware/Spyware or other nasties on it. Have had alot of friends that have brought home nasties via their Jump drives:mad:  Just have your anti virus program check your Jump drive from any other computer.
