XP starts in blank screen, unless Safe mode

Hi,
I have a new pc which started fine the first time, till we connected to the net, then when we restarted it a blank screen came up, but you could see the mouse. We went to restore point, and it was fine again, then after a couple of days, the start bar disappeared, so I went into Display Nvidia and found multiple screens. This made me think when the problem happened before it was due to seeing the other screen perhaps. So it happened again, but when playing with keyboard I could hit arrow or something and then get image on screen, which was background only. I have to wonder if the pc thinks that the monitor should show the other screen, not my number 1. So my question is does this sound plausible, and second of all would this account for my mouse to be going off edge of monitor (Asus 22")? Thanks

 

I would suspect a problem with the driver Go to the device manager and delete the driver for the display adapter then reboot the PC to allow it to redetect the device and reload the driver. If you have a driver disk point it towrds that.
