XP Themes

How do people get bitchen desktops like the ones on futurmarks "post your desktop" threads... and here mayby? Cant remember. Thanks.

 

Try looking on the MG main page under the "miscellaneous" heading (to the left) there you will find MG wallpapers and themes by several of our very own artists in residence. If you don't like the MG themes, click on the artists name (like iceman or wenchie for example) that will take you to their home pages where you will find very cool wallpapers, etc. We have some extremely talented creators in this group. Take a look and prepare to be amazed

How do you get it to chage the startbar and such as well?

 

I use Style XP.... it does cost a few dollars...
There are a few other ways (that I cannot remember!!) that are free..involves replacing a .DLL file....
but I am lazy and with StyleXP I can just click and the theme changes.....

 

Yep, Style XP (registered). Typically I'm a freak about wanting my downloaded software fancy and free, but I paid for this because I finally got tired of the same 'ol xp colors and you have to hand over the cash if you want the theme to stick when you reboot. Plus, there are lots of folks out there making the themes, so you can download like crazy and play with your look and feel.

Unfortunately, most of the themes people are making are (imho) way too busy and loud. I'm a real minimalist and also like to feel as if I'm not using tons of system resources just by opening the Start menu. Don't get me wrong, these folks who make the themes are really talented, but just not many to my taste. I typcally mix a separately downloaded desktop with one of the simpler themes or styles. You can download desktops all the way to full blown themes with icons, fonts and all.

It's fun.

 

Or you could legally use the hacked uxtheme.dll and not have to 'steal'

I've been using this software for about a year...good software. Although I've seemed to have run into a problem when I upgaded to XPro SP1....
For Boot screens and Login screens , I manually go in and replace the LOGONUI, and the ntosknl file in Safe mode. XPro doesn't seem to like this. My laptop just continue's to rebbot ,as if it can find the file?? No error messages or nothing, just reboots. Has anyone had this problem...would love to know the work around on this. I do know there is software out there for this. The link @ tgtsoft is a dead link.......

that is the .DLL I was talking about but could not remember....

I could never get it to work on mine, but I know several people who use it....

 

Does anyone know if there is a way to lock your sound theme from being changed? Many of these themes have their own sounds associated and even if they don't have sounds and even just when applying it to your current theme, it will reset the sounds to default or change them to their new theme. I keep the startup and shutdown sounds off as I feel it helps with boot/shutdown a little. Getting frustrating setting it back every time and sometimes I forget and the noises scare me outta my chair.
