    XP 'whacked' ?...

    Downloaded a program online, FreeSoundRecorder.exe.

Along with it came 'Windows Media Player' and many other OA 'allows' etc, which seemed to be a 'whack' of XP.

Took out Avast and SAS (finally got them reinstalled in 'safe mode' etc).

Scanned PC with Avast, SAS, and MBAM, but no finds.

Thinking of reverting OA with 'wizard' to eliminate any program/etc 'allows'.

Several XP functions seem to be affected... ie mostly 'display irregularities'.

'Search' only shows 'dog' instead of text boxes; 'Restore' shows blank screen, desktop (custom web view) shows Outlook Calendar image as day by day view instead of saved month view (like normally did); red text, instead of white, when boot; etc.

Office 2003 programs (Outlook, Excel, etc) seem to work ok.

Dell XP install was with SP-2, so couldnt use reinstall disk because added SP-3 later.

'Remove' software wouldnt let me remove SP-3.

OR... is my 5yr old D830 laptop is just dying ?
