I have Presario V2310 laptop that won't install its original Home XP recovery disk. The install fails at 34 minutes to go during "Installing Devices". I tried installing Kubuntu 8.04 which installed but also just hung at "Installing Hardware Devices".
For Home XP Install I removed the hard drive and checked "SetupLog.txt" on another system. The last part seems to show that there is a problem installing the "SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller". The listing for the last 2 Device Drivers being installed is:

I suspect there is a hardware problem and rather than getting a new mother board is there some way I can disable the SD Controller?

Or, some way to modify the XP Recovery Disk file so that it will not try to install the driver for the "SDA Compliant SD Host Controller?

Unfortunately, I have never seen a laptop where you could disable the SD slot. Try contacting Compaq/HP, maybe they have some 'trick'. In any case, hopefully the laptop is under warranty, as buying a replacement motherboard may be more expensive than just buying another laptop.
