Yahoo email

Recently Yahoo introduced the "character string" thing to reduce spam, so when I send an email I now have to sometimes enter the character code before it will send. However, it seems very fussy about capitalization, and it isn't always easy to tell if something is in uppercase or not, so it refuses to send my email if it is incorrect. This is really annoying. I've signed into my account, with password. Why do I have to do this to, and how does it reduce spam anyway?

So the non-beta version doesn't have this feature? If that is so maybe I will provide them with some feedback, because I would hate for them to make it standard when they are finished tweaking with the beta.

Yes, the original one does not have 'captcha' which is the name for it. If Yahoo is going to force this on us then I think I'll just leave. I have bad eyes and I don't need the extra aggravation. Besides, when I did try the beta when it first came out they told me I was a "few pixels short" (800x600). That did not sit well with me.

A few pixels short of a full screen huh? ;) Sounds like me lol

I'm in agreement...if this is Yahoo's plan I will be stopping using yahoo mail. The "capthca" alwasy has 'interference' around it, and, quite frankly, I have problems deciphering it too, for different reasons.

Open to suggestions on other free email services. I have hotmail already, but wondered if I am going to tell everyone a new email address, is there something better out there?

I think Gmail is pretty good, and I think their spam filters are better. I guess I'm having an off day and not understanding what's going on with Yahoo! mail.

In any event, I think Gmail might be a possibility. Of course you'd either have to get an inviation or you can have the invitation code as a text message to a mobile phone. I honestly don't know anything about the latter since I just got an invitation sent to me.

In all reality, I got two... one from someone and the other was sent to my Hotmail account. I had forgotten that I gave them my Hotmail address a while ago when I first found out about Gmail... soooo.. why not get one for my play stuff and the other for personal stuff. :)

I agree, separate gmail accounts works well for me and after near two years I still have not gotten any spam in my personal account. When you have an account one just invites oneself to a new one.

Hey hi, post this in the software section as you'll get more help there as this is only a lounge for chit-chat, not for tech help. :)

Do you use Outlook/Thunderbird or another email client? I still have a Yahoo account I keep up with through Thunderbird. I wonder if using an email client bypasses this hassle because I don't have to do it, or maybe it's the older version. Since I started using Gmail I don't use it much anymore.

A lot of people here will invite you to gmail if you want to try it. I have some too.

Basiculy it prevents scripts from using yahoo mail servers, as most scripts aren't smart enough to decipher the image file showing you the text. And now you know lev :)
