Yahoo messenger problem

I am not able to send IM's to the people that are not added on my contact list .

To test i tried to send IM back to myself without adding myself on my contact list but i didn't got the message back. but when i added my self on my contact list the messages i sent to myself popped back on the chat window.

what's the problem and how to resolve it?? i am currently using
Yahoo messenger 10.0.0.1102 and WIN XP

there's a setting to block messages from people who arent on your contact list. Could that be enabled for the people/person you are trying to send to?
