Okay, I've seen this in my search through the forum, but none of it quite fits my situation.

    I have a Compaq Presario 061
    XP Home, SP2
    Intel Celeron CPU 2.93 GHZ
    359 MB Ram
NTFS system Drive C 68.5 GB, free 56.9 GB
FAT Drive D (Recovery) 6 GB

I had Norton Internet Security installed on the computer when I purchased it. About a week and a half ago, I got a message saying it the Norton Internet Security (2006) had a file that was corrputed. I went to the site, followed all of their instructions and ended up uninstalling Norton. When I went back to reinstall, I could not do so because I did not have an order number. They wanted me to purchase the product to get an order number before I could reinstall. I told them "No thank you", and checked around with others as to what they used.

I ended up downloading the trial version of Trend Micro from the internet. So far, everything works well and I have until 9/11 to decide if I want to purchase it.

I tried to get on my Yahoo messenger and it would not come up at all. I uninstalled and then reinstalled. It would still not work. After I rebooted, it would finally launch (I had earlier version, and have now downloaded the 8.0 version), but it will not connect. I contacted Trend Micro, and they gave me instructions. I followed them to the letter. It still would not connect.

I emailed Yahoo (yes, I know that was foolish, but had nowhere else to turn) and they emailed me back giving the exact same things I had already tried because they are suggested on the help page.

I have deactivated my Windows firewall and am running with only the Trend Micro firewall. I don't know what else to do.

Anyone have any suggestions (besides changing the connection preferences on the messenger page; I have tried will all except proxy as I am not connected via proxy that I know of)?

Any and all help greatly appreciated.:)

Hallie, if you get sick of trying to fix Yahoo then try Trillian, (and then un-install Yahoo, of course), or go to the first link below for lots of other choices.

I use Trillian. It runs Yahoo, MSN, etc., all in one program. Bazza

    Instant Messenger type programs.

    Thanks, all, for the advice.

First of all, AVG is not an option for me anymore. I had it for 5 years, then downloaded an update and it crashed my computer. Something happened to the registry and I have been unable to access my hard drive ever since. I had to physically remove the hard drive and install it in another computer as a slave in order to retrieve my data. I thought it was absolutely wonderful and never had any problems, but one appointment changed my mind.

Norton has been removed from my computer, including all registry entries, I believe. I downloaded the tools yesterday and ran the programs (3 of them), and then did a search. There were many items left and I deleted each of them one by one. I downloaded this one suggested today and ran it as well (I believe it was also one of the ones I downloaded yesterday, so this program has been run at least twice now).

As to Trillion; I've never heard of it. Will it allow me to IM people on Yahoo and Messenger without their having to switch to Trillion? Will it transfer my contacts from Yahoo and Messenger?

Also, how do I uninstall Yahoo; I know to go to control panel and add/remove programs, but that won't take it out of the computer completely. Do I need to go into windows explorer and delete all files that say Yahoo, and then do I need to go into the registry and delete under user and local key any reference to Yahoo in the software section? I am really afraid to use regedit as I am extremely unexperienced with registry issues.

Again, thanks for any and all advice.:D

Yes, Trillian will allow contact with other Messenger type programs.
They do NOT NEED TO HAVE Trillian.
If you are not confident in removing Yahoo, then don't bother.
Just don't use it. Use Trillian instead. Bazza

PS:As an example, I use Trillian daily contacting a lady in West Africa.
    She uses Yahoo.

It will use your existing contacts. Baz
