Yet another sound problem

Win Vista Home premium


Problem: "no audio output device is installed" after re-install of Vista from emachines disk
I remember that the audio device was sigma tel before the re-install


Drivers from emachines website dont work.
2 drivers, both marked original, WTF?

This machine is not connected to the internet, so no "driver scans scams" will work.

"Codec check" (dowloaded from majorgeeks) IDs the AC'97 codec on this MB is RealTek

Everest Home version doesn't work, I get an access violation error.

First, uninstall any sound drivers that have been installed. Even if it didn't get the sound working, go to Programs & Features and remove the sound driver if possible. Then download and install your chipset drivers from this link. restart the PC when the install finishes. Then download the sound driver from this link but DO NOT install it yet. Now, download and install TUGzip. TUGzip can extract RAR files, ZIP files, 7zip files, many EXE files, and just about any archive or self-extracting archive you're likely to encounter. When installing TUGzip just click 'Next' all the way through. At the end of the install, there will be a little check-box for "Launch TUGzip"; go ahead and launch it; click "Next" all the way through again until you see a "Finish" button; there will be a column on the left side with a bunch of different archive formats; click the "Select All" button; click "Finish". A window will open that looks like an Explorer-type window, close it. Right click the file you downloaded (the file you want to extract, the sound driver) and click the 2nd upward pointing green arrow, it will say something like "Extract to: .\filename" and the file will extract to a folder of the same name. Now go to the Device Manager, right click the audio device and select "Update Driver". Now you'll use the "browse my computer" option and point the wizard to the ...\WDM\Vista folder in the extracted audio driver folder. Once the wizard 'sees' the needed files, the driver should install OK. Then restart the PC after it's done and you should have sound! Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

Thanks But....

Nope, still get the "no audio output device installed" icon. I did the chipset update, un packed the audio files and tried to update the driver through the device manager. Vista seems to think that the best driver is already installed.

Just on a whim, I uninstalled the driver and ran the setup program from the audio zip file. I get "the hardware detected is not supported by this IDT software package" etc.
Looks like we got the wrong audio downloaded?

I guess technically it's the wrong driver, simply because it doesn't work, but it is the driver for the same audio chipset, but EMachines probably has done something a bit different. Did you remember to install the chipset driver first? Anyway- try the same method of installing the driver via the Device Manager but use the driver(s) from the EMachine web site; they have 2 drivers for the audio, so try this driver, if it doesn't work, then try this driver. In the meantime, I'll see if I can find another driver. Also, if you could run Unknown Devices and post the info it shows about the audio device, it might help get the correct driver. In the Unknown Devices report window, right click the audio device and select Device Details for more detailed info and post that too....

Ran both emachines drivers, figured they might work after the chipset driver re-install

Setup runs but I get the little yellow !traingle in Device Manager.
