Am I that ignorant about computers or is this really something new.
I went to Geeks to go to check something out and happened across this article and demo. Supposedly they haven't put a permanent price on it yet. From what I understood from the demo, this is more for business then personal which makes sense,But just the thought of being able to download your WHOLE computer onto one stick @8GB is amazing. I mean if you had BSOD you could just install all your data back on from the stick and you haven't lost important data. Or does it work that way?I'm not an IT or that knowledgeable about computers that's why I hang out here.
Here's some links see what you think and give me some feedback.

    Hi

I dont see why not as technology moves forward and we can now boot to USB from many PCs hardware (BIOS) then this would be workable, although dont know how quick it would run as USB transfer speeds are not so good yet.

Is a bit of a caveate to saying well, we said your whole PC will fit on a USB stick, but then again it depends on how much you got on your PC, say for instance you have a 1TB HD and data.

Likely they employ compression techniques to get more data on the USB pens. Thats one thing I not tried yet is whil I have 2 USB pens that are bootable, I have not tried popping on it my Windows setup as yet, could be a task to try when on holiday next from work, as depending in Acronis allows me to recover an image file to USB, it could be a way of doing this, but doubt it may work, due to sizes of Windows install and apps, C: drive is currently at 44GB.

I'm not sure why as you are coping files to the pen and then just putting them back to the computer with said pen. Unless that isn't how it works !? I'm learning here so forgive my ignorance.

But as you said it compresses or may use compression...

...which I would think the same unless there are other ways of getting that much info on/in a smaller unit such as this stick...

    Hi

When you recover an image of your hdd in recovery then its likely to be looking for a bootable compatible hardware device, could also be looking for a hdd hardware only signature, not tried this yet as its a theory, thst msy or may nt work, but im going to test it, basically its not as simple as copying files you also need a mft anf bootblock, which is easy for recovery to hdd, just dont know if its the same with usb.

Willinstall a bare bones OS and see if this will be able to be imaged and copied to usb, this way it maybe posdible to image and pop it on usb as in the article, but dont think its going to be that easy :)

Still think 8gb would nwed some poweeful compression to be able to clone rhe average users full hdd.

Surely we are already doing this with Linux flash dives?

I have one on me at all times for computer reapir purposes, but I could just as easily use it every day. This cost be the grand total of £20 for the flash drive and £0.00 for the OS. (Ubuntu 9.04)

Also, what if the BIOS options were set to not beeot from USB, as most organisations have them at the moment?
