I recently got rid of the malware on my computer, but another problem has shown up. Youtube videos aren't working.

    What I did: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1602343&posted=1#post1602343

I didn't want to tamper with anything, install whatever new stuff I think that I may need, since I'm obviously no expert.

The problem is, everything shows up, except where the video and video controls are. It's just a black box. It works when I open the video on a channel, or when I make the video open in it's own window (i did this by clicking around where the button for it ought to be).

any ideas? I'm running windows XP SP3.

You had a lot of fun over at the malware board.

What browser are you using? Do you have more than one browser? Does it happen on all of them? It isn't asking for any plug ins or giving any other messages, it's just a black box. If you have just IE try firefox or chrome or another alternative and install the flash player that it asks for. (if you install firefox, don't import from IE for this trial. I can walk you through importing it later if you wish)

That I did... glad that conflicker is gone. Freedom at last ^^

Anyhow, to answer your questions, I use firefox, and I just tried on IE 8, after installing the required plugin. Still just a straight black box, now on both browsers. No warnings, nothing.

Could be some of that newly installed security. Do you have issues streaming embedded content from other sites?

    Greetings, dannskunk.

I get the same symptoms on all computers - must be a YouTube issue. I'd suggest trying again later, and keeping an eye out for any trouble reports on the tech-news sites.

Maybe you both got the same update because it's fine for me. dannskunk, what security do you have now?

I'm new to these forums, just registered because I've been searching the entirety of Google for someone with the same problem that I have. dannskunk, that seems to be you.

I'm running Windows 7 (this started happening before I got SP1 yesterday, but the update changed nothing). I'm having the same issues, but I did want to add that for my variant I have no issues streaming embedded videos. dannskunk, does your issue work the same way?

I hope this is the right response instead of making an entirely new thread for such a similar problem... hope someone can help the two of us!

Have you run all of the microsoft updates? You might have picked up a bad Tuesday update. I try not to update the first few days, usually not until friday or later. Saves a lot of headaches. You can undo most updates in the add/remove programs if you check the box at the top to show updates.

I actually ended up doing all of my Microsoft updates today, after I've had the YouTube issue for awhile, so I don't *think* that would be the problem. I do my updates in clumps, manually choosing the ones I want to install, and I've viewed YouTube videos on the website since my last relevant update.

Do you know of anything else that may be causing this? For what it's worth, two of the times that I've tried to view YouTube site videos I've gotten a window that says "error: document.body is null". However, every other time -- even just refreshing the window after receiving this error -- I get no information at all and just a black screen. The errors have both appeared during the first YouTube video I tried to load after opening Firefox, though it does not necessarily happen each time I open Firefox and try to load a video.

Probably too much info... but I'd rather say too much then leave out something important.

OK, to answer, I have Avira AntiVir, and Comodo (firewall only). Could Comodo be the problem, I wonder?

The problems have cleared up here with nothing done machine-wise, so at least in my case this must have been a temporary issue (network related, maybe?).

@ dannskunk: one way to find out - temporarily disable Comodo, see if your symptoms change. For that matter, you could do the same with AntiVir for troubleshooting purposes.

My YouTube works now as well. I wonder if it was on their side?

In any case, thanks to you all for your time!

    Hey Guys,
I think I have a solution for you two. First off what version of Adobe Flash Player are you using?

This thread might be an interesting sideline read - apparently, YouTube is going through some changes that are affecting multiple users.

OK, found the problem. Spock's correct. It has to do with flash.

Here's the deal; youtube has found that a "small percentage of users" are experiencing my problem, and it appears that disabling Adobe Flash's Hardware Acceleration will fix the problem.

    Easy step-by-step work around/solution here

Youtube has claimed that they are working with Adobe to fix the problem.

Dannskunk you can also just downgrade to Flash player !0 and that will solve your problem. I had this problem a few weeks ago and that's how i corrected it.
