You've Really Got To Be F#@in& Kidding ME !!!!!

Has it really gotten this bad? I wanted to get a different driver for my Realtek wireless card and I found a link to this majorgeeks at another forum.
I followed the link for the realtek 1.221 driver and was given the choice of about half dozen mirrors. The first was the "authors site" from which I was told the file didn't exist. The next was a 'majorgeeks" mirror site in Texas and next one in Florida.

I chose Florida and about thirty seconds into the download I got a window telling me that I needed something like fixwindowsregistry.com or something like that. Said I needed to go to the site and follow instructions on how to fix this. I was, needless to say, flabbergasted. How could I pick this crap up from what I was assured was a reputable site?

I tried to ignore it once I learned what a Go@@amn nightmare it would be to "repair' on my own, but it kept pestering me with new popups and generally getting in the way of everything. So I did the drastic. I spent an hour reinstalling winXP on the laptop. Hell of and inconvenience but necessary.

When winxp finished installing, and I was in the MIDDLE of setting up the internet connection (i had not connected YET) I get a pop up warning me of horrific registry errors and i need to go to helpfixpc.com to correct them.
WTF??????????? I've never, in six years of pulling hair over these criminally motivated extorsions, seen one that survived a fresh install.

So I look up helpfixpc.com and want to guess what the first hit was on google? That's correct, forums.majorgeeks.com. You've just got to be fu@in% kidding me!

NO, I don't want/need any malware removal software. I don't care to mess with a registry "mechanic". I've been 99% happily successful using Kmeleon browser with java/javascript off and only turn it on when needed. I've NEVER had such a sticky problem before with malware. This is just so demoralizing I swear to god, I'm a peaceful man, but If I had the author of such sleazily extorsionist bull$hit in the room with me and a handy blunt object I'd definitely enjoy earning my way toward a life term in prison.

Now I have to get out the DBAN and just scour my harddrive.
    Yeah, you guys just rock!

The mouse is a tool, not a device to repeatedly click on any link until your fingers are raw.

I wish you luck with your endeavor with DBAN.

First I want to assure you (and others who may read this thread) that you did not pickup any malware from Majorgeeks. And you are correct that most malware will not survive a proper format and reinstall if the reinstall is performed from uninfected media.

You could just be having Windows Messenger popups. I suggest you do the below.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger.

Thank you so much for the constructive help Adrynalyne. What???
Why does some waste-of-space s#it for brains always have to weigh in with crap like..

"The mouse is a tool, not a device to repeatedly click on any link until your fingers are raw."

That's cute. Did you get that from your 11 year old?

And I 'd like to assure you chaslang, and anyone else reading this thread that I indeed did get malware while downloading the realtek driver version 1.221 from your site. Check it out - what's with the smug assurances to everyone?

I'm pretty sure that there is nothing like helpfixpc.com that naturally resides within windowsxp. But you were probably too prejudiced in the face of my little rant that you didn't even read far enough to notice that this was the window that popped up. The reinstall was performed with the discs that came with my toshiba laptop.

And Adrynalyne .. (god, the user name even sounds like it must be an eleven year old - I hope I'm not picking on a child here) I had splendid "luck" with the DBAN. Everything is crystal clean now - thank you very much for being so concerned that you just had to take a swipe. (what the hell purpose do some people serve with this stuff? Worse than trolls. I do hope you'll resist adding anymore drivel in here.

What difference does it make anyway? Some majorgeek will probably just get rid of this thread anyway. What a team!

Good night. And sincerely good riddance.

First let me say that if you keep up the insults and and curses (even if hidden behind special keys) you will not be able to post here anymore. You attitude and replies indicate that you are the one behaving like an 11 year old.

You did not get malware from downloading this file from Major Geeks! All of our files are tested (unlike many other sites) before they are posted. All I can say is that you may have already had whatever malware you believe you got from that download and it just happened to show itself at the same time you were downloading. Getting random popups like you indicated are (as I stated already) often just due to Windows Messenger.

I read your whole message. You made no mention of Toshiba discs in the first message and you still have not proven that you picked up any malware from a download link at Major Geeks. You appear to not have read my message. If you did a clean reinstall and you got that popup, it even indicates that it is even more likely to be a popup from Windows Messenger.

I downloaded the file you are referring to and ran it thru multiple tests just to double check and I have no such problems with it. Thus the problem more than like is something on your end.

You did not get infected from Majorgeeks. If you wish to slander us, you had better prove it. Adrynalyne, while probably not tactful, is correct. Odds are you cliked an ad, hence why he said slow down and read what your clicking. We have been doing this since 1997 and your situation is nothing new. While I understand your frustrations, the disrespect and language towards us is not a way to get more help. I hope you see that bro.

And now for the breakdown. As a site owner, I hope this answers your questions.

    [

This is a bad start. I mean really, what was this to accomplish? A little tact goes a long way.

Yes, while this may come as a suprise to you, the United States is only one of many countries in the world. We serve worldwide and offer multiple mirrors. You simply pick the mirror nearest you. Maps are available online to decide these complicated manners, like which is closer, Texas or Florida. Please dont ask a local Miss Teen contestant to help you here ;)

Here, you might be entitled to an apology of sorts. Sounds like you clicked an ad. We filter ads for quality, this one sounds questionable. However, if you truly clicked Florida, then waited a whopping 3 seconds, your download would have started. You didnt want to wait 3 seconds, and in haste, clicked an ad.

Holy crap, how did we get to reinstalling XP? My business partner has a machine running Windows 98 thats never been formatted. A guess would be considering how click happy you were, it came from almost anywhere, hence Adrynalynes comments.

I will leave this be, except to say AFTER a clean install your still bitching. Guess thats our fault too? You do know you can be infected within 30 seconds of a fresh install? Its well documented, Google it.
So, you got a popup and the sad thing is, you friggin clicked it. Hello? You disabled java and seem semi savvy, then click a popup ad telling you theres a problem. Thats lame ad tactics from years ago that my grandmother knows not to do. Your expertise is severly damaged and our claims that your too click happy are backed up here. You wont like that comment, but the truth hurts.

Because your now so frustrated, and I appreciate that, that you are blaming your issues on us, not your own "click like mad" habits. Google us, go to Siteadvisor, odd were a top 4,500 website in the world, and only a few complain. But you wont admit that were a clean, trusted site and your problems are your own. You guys never do.

Well, Registry Mechanic is good software, but your right, you dont need it. Easy enough. Sorry, still laughing that a popup ad appeared as mentioned above and you clicked it. Want to get rid of the bad guys? Stop clicking stupid shit. You didnt fall for that King overseas who needs $5k to have you hold and transfer his money did you? Viagra online? Hot webcam chick that wants to show ONLY you her goodies? Why click ANY popup ad or any ad claiming you got a problem then. Nuff said.

No doubt. Read all the people we help here. This got out of control... and fast. I hope you see that. Good luck to you. My guess is you wont come back. Its easier to vent and run away, so you fell like you won, then face the truth. See ya!
