    Hi guys,

I tried to perform a backup when my AV found a trojan. I then came to this site registered and followed the instructions posted for vista users regarding malware removal.

I cannot turn on security center nor access windows defender and firewall. I thank you in advance for your help.

    Cheers.

Before we continue I would like for you to use MSConfig to put this machine back into normal start up mode.

    http://img805.imageshack.us/img805/9659/rktigzy.gif Fix items using RogueKiller.

Double-click RogueKiller.exe to run. (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
When it opens, press the Scan button
Now click the Registry tab and locate this detection:

    • [V2][ROGUE ST] 4793 : wscript.exe - C:\Users\NEERAJ~1\AppData\Local\Temp\launchie.vbs //B -> FOUND
Place a checkmark each of these items, leave the others unchecked.
    Now press the Delete button.
When it is finished, there will be a log on your desktop called: RKreport[2].txt
Attach RKreport[2].txt to your next message. (How to attach)
    Reboot the machine.

Re run Hitman and have it delete Malware remnants, & Potential Unwanted Programs.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    • O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [SearchProtect] \SearchProtect\bin\cltmng.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
    • O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [SearchProtect] \SearchProtect\bin\cltmng.exe (User 'Default user')

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.

After reboot, check to see if your firewall is working.

Give ccleaner a run (not the reg scanner just the cleaner itself)

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista, Windows7 or Win8) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

Thanks Kestrel13! for your willingness to help me, I appreciate it.

I didn't have any problems going through the steps.

One thing happened that I'd like to share is that I did not disable my AV when I ran the C:\MGtools\analyse.exe. I disabled it right after but not before it picked up two items which I then "cleaned up".

The reboot after running the "windows repair" showed a black screen with the text: "Hitmanpro 3.7 - Spearhead B.V." just before the login screen. Afer logging on, the screen went black for an unusual long time before the desktop appeared.

I did not mention it in my original post, I have been getting "about:blank" webpages from time to time. I followed the intructions on this site and hopefully it fixed it.

The security essentials page is shaping up. I can see and access the settings but I still can't open windows defender.

The MGtools zip log did not upload b/c it was in the original post. Not sure why none of the logs renamed themselves 1,2,..., etc. Hope this works.

    Cheers,

And how are things running currently?

  6. JoeyBats

Things are running much better thanks to you! I can see and manipulate items in security center.

But, I still can't access windows defender. Also, I did a reboot to see how long it takes to load the desktop, the screen after the login page stayed black for some time.

    Thoughts?

Click start > and type services.msc and hit ENTER.
Scroll down to the Windows Defender service and let me know it's start up type and status. If you try and right click to start the service, what occurs?

    Hey Kestrel13!,

    Windows Defender is not listed.

When you click start and type windows defender does it pop up in the list?

It pops up and when I click on it I get this message: "Application failed to initialize: 0x80070006. The handle is invalid."

You can try having a go at this and if it does not help please post in the software forum. :)

Thanks for the suggestion, but that didn't help. The message given was "the fix does not apply to your operating system or application version."

I ran a windows update yesterday with no hiccups but this morning I tried it again and got this: Code80072EFD.

I know windows defender is not as strong as other programs, but it's nice to be able to access it and disable/enable at one's free will, yeah?

    Cheers,

Of course it is. I agree. Please post about this in the software forum. Thanks. :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. If you are running Win 8, Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below to flush restore points:
      • Refer to the instructions for your WIndows version in this link: Disable And Enable System Restore
      • What we want you to do is to first disable System Restore to flush restore points some of which could be infected.
      • Then we want you to Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Hey Ketrel13!,

I stopped at the 2nd step in your instructions. I am experiencing longer boot times since the cleaning. For example, after the login page the screen goes black for ~35 seconds before the desktop shows. Should I continue and post this in another forum?
