I noticed my zip files folder icons changed from whatever they were to now being a folder with a zipper up the left side. Is this a sign of malware or have the zip folder icons been change?
While I'm in here, is there any problem about completely removing the Windows Messenger, or is it better to hide it?
    Thanks millions! :)

Maybe I can answer one of my own questions. The zip folders look like that because I don't have winzip, is that true? I got them out of the zip folder using Windows Explorer. So this is probably not because of malware.

The other question, I'm not sure about, whether there's any reason NOT to uninstall Windows Messenger, but I just downloaded SP2 today, so maybe it got rid of itself?

    Hi Abri

Yes if your not using a 3rd party compression/zip utility, then XPs built in one will take over again and it looks like a folder with a zip up/down the left hand side.

Windows Messenger? as in the Messenger Service.. if so SP2 disables it by default.

    Thanks Halo,
I'm using a new hard drive which I partitioned and installed about a year ago for just a few weeks. Now I've gone back to using it. For the most part it is fairly empty, but I'm getting spam mails directly related to my internet searches and I don't know if that's because something's watching my cookies or if there's actually something in the computer I don't want.

I've gotten rid of Norton's including the protected bin and replaced it with AVG 7.5 and I downloaded SP2 and the Win Tool for Malicious Software. I would like to post the logs and ask if the thing called Scunin.exe is something I don't want. I'll post the logs as soon as I have them. I have a question though.

I thought counter spy is only for Win98? Do I need to run it? I would rather not run a trial version of AVG anti-spyware, because I would prefer to keep my trial allowance for a time when I think I might need it more.

I will finish all the logs before I continue.
    Thanks so much! :)

    Hi :)
I'm attaching the logs I got. I couldn't get Panda to run. When I loaded it, at the bottom of the browser page it said errors on the page with the little yellow warning sign. I tried it a number of times, also without my firewall. It started to load the tool once (which I already have on the computer in add/remove programs), but it stopped about halfway through.

I am not having big problems with my computer. I noticed that my spam references are following my internet surfings very closely, so I wondered if there might be something tracking. I've been using CCleaner whenever I leave the internet.

Thanks very much for looking at these.

    Hi Halo,
Were we jostling for space? :) ... I had trouble getting my post in. lol
Here's the HJT. I will consider Counter Spy. From the Read Me thread, it looked like you have to take a trial version of Counter Spy.

I'm trying to figure out what the topic of this thread really is. It appears to have multiple subjects.
    1. ZIP icon, I assume resolved?
    2. Windows Messenger, I assume resolved?
    3. SPAM, open issue
    4. Scunin.exe, open issue.

    1. SPAM - Spam rarely has anything to do with malware. It more frequently has to do with who and where you give your email address to. Once you are on spam lists, you are on the forever and will be added to more and more. You have to be more careful who you give your email address to. It is best to have a junk email account to use when signing up at various websites to avoid issues like this. Also be wary of "friends" who love to send huge emails or forward emails to all kinds of people with jokes and other junk. This will get you on spam lists so fast your head will spin. Never give these "friends" you good email address. Only give them the junk list. It is too late now unless you want to delete your email accounts and create new ones. That can cause a few headaches but it will stop the spam unless you start using your email account where you should not be.
    2. Scunin.exe - you installed Starcraft. You need to keep track of what you install and what it puts on your system.

Actually, no, I forgot about windows messenger. Installing SP2 didn't disable it. I'll try to deinstall it completely, because it pops up everytime I open OE.
