Running Spybot keeps showing ZLob.DNSchanger. It seems to remove it but it keeps showing up again even if I scan straight away. Ad-aware SE and Zonealarm security suite don't seem to pick it up. I am running Win XP.

Any suggestions as to how I can get rid of this permenantly?

    Thanks.

Here are the Combofix, AVG and MG logs.

I have also started getting warning messages through Zonealarm saying "Internet explorer is attempting to monitor user activities on this computer. If allowed it may try to track or log keystrokes, mouse movements/clicks, web sites visisted and other user behaviors." Running a scan through Zonealarm still come up with nothing though.

    Thanks.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Observation/suggestion: It is a very bad idea to save your downloads like below. Nothing should be in the C:\Program Files folder except things put there by an installation program. Save your downloads somewhere else that is safe.
    C:\Program Files\aawsepersonal.exe
    C:\Program Files\AdbeRdr20_ppc_enu.exe
    C:\Program Files\spybotsd14.exe
    C:\Program Files\zlsSetup_65_714_000_en.exe

You need to refer to the first step in the READ AND RUN ME where we say you must not use MSconfig to control startups. Please put your system in Normal Startup mode now and keep it that way. If it tells you to reboot, please do so and then continue with the below either way.

Run this WareOut Removal and attach the requested log.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{8D11D38E-09A8-45E6-A71E-3FAB138805F2}: NameServer = 85.255.116.56,85.255.112.146

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Now reboot

After reboot look for all of the above files we had Avenger attempt to delete. If you still see them, delete them yourself.

Also delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\AN\Local Settings\Temp

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Thanks for the help.

I ran everything and have attached the logs below.

Spybot (both in safe mode and normal mode) does not seem to pick anything up now. Nor does Zonealarm (it did pick up Win32.Trojan.Startpage.239 before the fix). I am still getting warning messages from Zonealarm whenever I click on forms or drop-down menus saying "Internet Explorer is attempting to monitor user activities ..... and may try to tack or log keystrokes, mouse movements/clicks, websites visited...." as before.

A couple of issues during the process:

    "O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present" didn't show up on HijackThis
"O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{8D11D38E-09A8-45E6-A71E-3FAB138805F2}: NameServer = 85.255.116.56,85.255.112.146" showed up with different Nameserver numbers but I clicked it anyway.

Where do I need to look for these files?

I got an error message when running MGTools\GetLogs.bat saying "Application has generated an exception that could not be handled. Process id=0x884 (2180), Thread id=0xdac (3500)" and I had to terminate the application. It did seem to generate a log though.

I have also noticed that since running the fixes the computer takes a long time to boot up and I get a MS-DOS window coming up for a little while each time I restart. Is this OK and also do I need to stay in normal start-up mode in MSCONFIG?

It also seems that all the logs in Zonealarm have been wiped. Is that normal?

Finally would it be safe to use system restore at any point or could there be something hiding behind there? And can I uninstall the programs I have installed for the fixes?

    Thanks.

Not malware. It is just watching what you are doing. It you don't allow all your normal activities to occur all the time, than you will always get warnings about them. You need to lean the difference between things you are doing/running and malware.

Sorry that sentence about Avenger should have been edited out of your fix. It did not apply in your case.

This is occurring because you do not have the Microsoft .NET Framework software installed from Microsoft Update.

Can you give more info on this? Are you sure it is not something that you have installed.

MSconfig must remain in Normal Startup mode. MSconfig is only a temporary debugging tool. It should never be used for long term controlling of startups.

How to deal with startup processes.
    • First you should uninstall any software that you do not use.
    • Second if you have processes still trying to load at startup even though you have uninstalled them. You can simple use HijackThis to easily remove the startup. That way you will not have to manually edit the registry.
    • Third for software you do not want to uninstall but you don't want it to load at startup, look in the program for an option not to load when Windows starts and disable it this way. If you cannot find an option like that you have two possible actions:
      • if you never want it to load at startup, use HJT to permanently remove the startup.
      • if you sometimes want it to load at startup, use a program like Startup CPL to enable or disable as you see fit.

Logs are temporary files and will always be removed by running any kind of disk cleanup programs (like CCleaner and ATF-Cleaner).

If you used system restore now you would undo eveything we have been changing/fixing. Part of the final steps of malware removal is to toggle system restore off then back on to remove ALL previous restore points since they are not trust worthy. And that is what we will be doing now since your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix then UNINSTALL COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN
      • Now type combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
      • Note: The space between the X and the /U, it must be there.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you run RenV.exe, you can delete it and the Log.txt file on your Desktop.
    9. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    10. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    11. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    12. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    13. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Everything seems OK now. I haven't been getting the MS-DOS window any more so not sure what it was.

    Thanks for the help.
