Z* as a side note, about the Z's, its because my left shift button capitaliZes, but tabs as well. ZMy right one capitaliZes, but makes a capital Z as well, and is a lot simpler. ZI think it's just a problem with the keyboard, not a virus, however ZI could be mistaken. ZI'll delete them in the rest of the post, though.

I was attempting to follow the XP rules, when I got to the installing portion of the anti-spyware. However, as I attempted to download some of the things, it told me that my windows installer wasn't working properly, which happened before when I tried to install Java. Just now I was looking for HiJack this as well, and I cannot find my program files folder (I don't think I just forgot where it was.) Any suggestions?

    Try running this 9url=http://www.majorgeeks.com/Windows_Installer_CleanUp_Utility_d4459.html]Cleanup[/url]

and you have tried a different keyboard?

nope, same error occurred. It won't let me install that either. and I'm using a laptop, so going without capital letters seems a lot easier than replacing my current one. and maybe the Z thing will be my signature style ;Z). it kinda screws up smilies though.

EDIT: I also forgot to mention in the first post, when I click on the start menu, it only shows a few programs, it won't show the programs menu, my computer, and it shows the shut down option, but not the log out one.

At this point I'm not sure you have malware...can you do a system restore? What changes where made to the computer recently? Can you get online and do an online scan?

If so Go to Bitdefender agree to the license and then select Scan. DO NOT CHANGE THE OPTIONS TO SHOW ALL FILES SCANNED. That will make your logs huge and we don't need to see clean files. Once Bitdefender completes the scan:

Click-on the Detected Problems tab. Then select Click here to export the scan report

When the window comes up to save the report, change the Save as type: box to Text (Tab Delimited) (*.txt) and then in the File name box enter change to bdscan then click save. This will save a file named bdscan.txt in whatever folder you are currently in when you save the file (take notice of where you are at so you can find it later). This bdcan.txt file will actually contain HTML code that we can easily view later while reviewing your log. All we have to do is rename the file to bdscan.html.

this is definitely malware, computer running ridiculously slow, freeZing every few seconds, pop ups saying i have malware, clock replaced that after the time says virus alert in caps, background replaced saying i have malware, and a few programs have been installed supposedly malware scanners, but i looked them up, i think they're a virus or were installed by one. viruswebprotect2008.com was the url given when i hovered over it, online it said it was a virus, but when i tried to perform it, i couldn't run it for some reason. also, the explorer bar on the bottom of the screen keeps restarting or something, disappearing for a while, then when it comes back up, all it shows is the start button and clock for a while, a couple minutes later it comes back showing the programs. i'm trying to run the bitdefender scan, but at the moment i'm not getting much luck.

ComboFix doesn't require an installation..download it to your desktop and double click it.

well, combofix seems to have helped out a lot, after the reboot it didn't get me a log, though, but then I ran spybot afterwards and it said i had a few things, most notably virtumonde. then i ran vundofix, and it didn't find anything.

and my start menu still is missing everything.

    Yup...you're a mess..lets do this:

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following:

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it(Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.
    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Much better....a few things to address:

You need to disable the quest account.

It appears as though you once had McAfee? Did you remove it as only the uninstaller is showing in add/remove programs. Which indicates you are running without anti-virus.

    Please download and install:
    Java Runtime 6

Run thisDisable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temp

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Be sure to tell us how things are running.

alright, almost everything seems fine. the only problem I'm having now is in the start menu, on the right side it only lists Set Program Access and Defaults, Connect To, and Printers and Faxes. I don't remember what is missing, but I know a lot is.

the bigger problem for me is that I have to go through to run programs in order to get to C: Under My Computer, it isn't listed, and I'm not sure how to make it show up there.
