    Hi,

I downloaded Zone Alarm free last night because Norton internet security 2006 has really ticked me off lately. The program kept freezing up and not running the way it used to. Now I am using zone alarm and AVG. My computer is running a lot better. The problem I was having with zone alarm is blocking programs that seem to be windows related. I couldn't access the internet. I couldn't even access microsoft update. I changed a setting in firewall advanced settings to allow outgoing DNS/DHCP is that right or wrong? I can now access the internet and microsoft update. It also blocked netbios is that good or bad. I guess I am looking for set up information. I just let it do its own thing when I installed it. The only setting I changed was the one above. Thanks in advance for any help.

Like most firewalls they start out in "Learn Mode" which means that you have to click there application blocks for every program you are going to use. Just check the always remember block and yes bar for all programs that you want to have access. its a pain to begin with but after a few days you will rarely get a notice. just be sure that the programs that pop up are the ones you know and trust before checking the always remember and yes tabs.

As for the change to the DNS/DHCP I would reverse that move.

Just remember that to start you will get every program causing a pop up. Hope that helps

These particular issues did not give me any options to allow or block. They were automatically blocked with just a popup notification. Looking at the firewall log it seems that they have to do with my modem. I have DSL service and use a external X5 Zoom modem. The only way I have internet access is to allow outgoing DNS/DHCP in the advances settings.

I added one of the entries from the log to the trusted zone since I am sure it has to do with the modem. I reversed the DNS/DHCP option and now I am up and running again. Is comando free as well?
