On Sunday, I was surfing the internet when McAfee informed me that it had found a ZoneAccess trojan, but it stated that I didn't need to do anything further. However, the trojan continued to reappear and reappear, and eventually McAfee told me that I needed to restart my computer in order for it to completely delete the problem. I have not used the computer again until tonight, and tonight I have only been attempting to solve the problem.

On the restart, I received the following message: "Error loading C:\Users\SeSaMe\AppData\Roaming\umsop.dll"

In addition, my Windows firewall was turned off, and cannot run or update.

I ran McAfee's stinger, and it repaired a services.exe file, but could not repair a desktop.ini file.

The requested files and logs are below. Thank you for you help!

Please download ComboFix to your desktop and run it. Do not do anything while it runs. Attach the log when it is finished.

As you no doubt figured out, it was a ZeroAccess trojan, not ZoneAccess. Sorry.

The ComboFix log is attached. The computer restarted several times while ComboFix was running.

Since running it, I have not done anything on my computer other than attempt to use Firefox or Internet Explorer to access this website. I could not use either--both said, "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion" when I attempted to open them. So I am posting this reply from another computer.

In addition, my Windows firewall does appear to be repaired, but obviously not everything is quite back to normal yet. Thanks again for your help!

    Hello, blankpage37

This is normally fixed by re-booting your pc.

    Please do the following afterwards:

    Step 1:
Please look in Add/Remove Programs (Programs and Features if using Vista or Windows 7) for the following and uninstall if found. If you get any errors just make a note and continue on.
Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Step 2:
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Step 3:
Now we need to use ComboFix.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware, firewall...etc) programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. *Remember to re-start them before coming back online.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text inside of the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    Notes:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

*If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you receive the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion", then you will need to reboot your computer which will normally fix this problem.

    Step 4:
Now install the latest Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Step 5:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file to your next reply.

    * Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure; and answer this - "What malware problems are you still experiencing?"

dr.moriarty, I followed all of your instructions, and my computer appears to be working properly again. I am not seeing any symptoms of malware. However, on Step 2 from your instructions, HJT did not find (and thus I did not fix) the following:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9D425283-D487-4337-BAB6-AB8354A81457} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {9D425283-D487-4337-BAB6-AB8354A81457} - (no file)
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [umsop] rundll32.exe "C:\Users\SeSaMe\AppData\Roaming\umsop.dll",CleanupGlobalTempFiles

Everything else went exactly as described. Thank you!

    :)

    You're very welcome!

Just to tidy up a bit, using Windows Explorer - navigate to and delete:
    • c:\users\SeSaMe\AppData\Local\Conduit <--- folder
    • C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Temp\RACD28A.tmp <--- file
    • C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Temp\RACE3DA.tmp <--- file

Your logs look good! If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. It provides no "real-time" protection unless you purchase it and does not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and re-enable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have re-enabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work through the below link:

Thanks for all your help! I used the computer much of yesterday evening, and a bit more today, and there have been no further problems. I followed your directions from the previous post, except that I could not delete the following because they were not present:

    C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Temp\RACD28A.tmp
    C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Temp\RACE3DA.tmp

Also, HijackThis was not listed in my add/remove programs menu, nor did it show up in a search.

Thanks again! You guys provide a great service here!

I don't know if this is related to the last issue that I had, but a few days ago (about a week after I declared everything fine, and with no other problems occurring since then), I inserted a music CD into my DVD-RW drive, and while it recognized the disc, it would not play it--in iTunes, Winamp, or Windows Media Player--or let me explore it. When viewed in Windows Explorer, every file is Track01 (etc.), 1 KB in size, Audio CD Track (type), modified 12/31/1994 at 8:00 PM, located at "Files Currently on the Disc." I was, however, able to install a video game from a CD-ROM, but even after that, the problems with music CDs continue. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

I don;t think that is related to the malware you had, so please pursue that issue in the software forum. ;)
