ZoneAlarm browser security. Spywareblaster conflict?

I switched from PC Tools Firewall to the free ZoneAlarm one on my XP desktop recently. When I open the control center it says "your web browsing security is not installed", which makes perfect sense, since the free firewall comes with nothing but the firewall.

However, when I open Firefox I have ZoneAlarm Browser Security installed, and it certainly seems active. It keeps a log and everything.

What I'm worried about is that it will conflict with my SpywareBlaster and the Spybot browser anti-hijack feature. I have used those two for years and like them, so if I have to choose ZA gets the axe. I'm hoping someone here can shed some light on the situation though. Do I need to get rid of one of my browser protectors? It certainly feels like I'm starting to have way too many of them...

I've used all three of those programs together for years. I've never had a conflict.

    Hi Mimsy

Spywareblaster I would think is not the issue as it just adds entries into the Privacy > Sites list in the browsers.

Try disabling Spybot or temporarily uninstall it to test.

Just so I'm in the right menu, when you say control center, is this the Windows Security Control Center? if it is then a conflict may have happened in swaping from one security app to another, as you know not all files every really get removed or updated, so run this to reset the security center, it automates the manual instructions like I posted HERE (back half of the post)

The control center I'm talking about is the ZoneAlarm "main menu". I get to it by right-clicking on the Z in the system tray and open Control Center, and all the ZA settings and firewall configuration menus are there.

I'll try disabling Spybot and see if it makes a difference. In addition to possible conflicts, I've noticed that browsing has slowed down considerably since the ZA toolbar installed itself.

Toolbar was the first thing I got rid of! Useless piece of garbage IMO. ;)

    Hi Mimsy

Maybe a re-install of ZA may help fix this issue if after uninstalling Spybot and rebooting its not cleared up. TBH I have not been a fan of ZA since Checkpoint took over, app went downhill and too many issues like this for me to ever suggest it as a good FW option now, if you had no issues before ZA was installed suspect ZA as the culprit.

I run an very old version (pre-checkpoint) of ZA on two of the three XP computers. 4.5.594. Since I'm behind a router, I don't need to worry about incoming. I do like ZA which alerts me to EVERYTHING outgoing.
If you want an old version, you can grab one here:

I can report that it plays nice with SpywareBlaster, Malwarebytes and Avira.

Ya, that's the only reason that I might use it with XP but with W7 I don't see the need for ZA anymore. It's sad to say that as ZA was numero uno before 5.XX for me. Thanks, you old ZA caretakers.:) I can pay for it now but I won't. R.I.P
