    Last week I downloaded an update to my ZoneAlarm, but on start up I have many (20+) C:\Windows\System32 processes crashing and terminiating. Zonealarm reported instability and eventually Windows shut down and restarted.

    I've gone back to a system restore point before the download, and I've uninstalled Zonealarm because there was still an updater function running that did not seem to function properly. I'm back on Windows Firewall for now, but why have I had problems with the latest Zonealarm update? I previously had issues with an AVG update and it turnd out my system was loww on resources.

    Edit - Running XP SP3

    Hello misterbojangles:wave I don't know why ZA is doing that, but have heard others having issues with ZA too, so I would suggest leaving your Windows FW on, and dowloading PC Tools Firewall Plus. It is free, and also, if it asks you if you want to install "Threatfire", click no to that.

    By leaving your Windows FW on, PC Tools FW will pick up info from the Windows FW, and then shut it off and replace it with PC Tools FW. Not hard to do at all.

    You can download PC Tools FW Here:PC Tools FW

    I have Windows XP, SP3, and use it and I do like it. No problems, no issues.
    I also have AVG-9, with no issues.

    Hope this helps;)

    Nice one:celebrate

    I had a similar resource issue a few months ago when I updated AVG and my system ground to a crawl. I ditched in favour of Comodo AV, and it has been great since. I may well need to upgrade my hardware or even trade it in for a newer model, but I'm reluctant to spend.

    I wasn't 'Threatfire' it asked me to download at same time, but Spyware Doctor or something. I said no.

    Cheers.

    Hello misterbojangles! Nice going, saying NO to the Spyware Doctor, that stuff is always changing.. rolleyes How much RAM have you got on that machine? You may or may not want to add some RAM to it, depends on how much you have and how old your machine is. Upgrading is always an option.

    I haven't had any issues with AVG-9, but some like it, and some don't. Just a personal preference, I suppose.:) Good that you have PC Tools FW now! That is a nice tool. ;) I think you will be happy with it. IF, on the other hand, you find you are having "low on resources" issues, you may want to re-think adding some extra RAM to it. Just something to keep in mind.

    Glad I could help :wave

    RAM = 1GB
    Harddisk = 40 GB (>95% full)
    Processor = 2.8GHz

    Hello again, misterbojangles :wave If you are not getting the "system is low on resources", you should be set.

    If you are still getting it, my bet would be the harddisk at 95% full. Might have to find a way to free up some of that space.

    Do you do regular maintanance? What I am looking for, is basic computer maintenance, can free up a lot of space....

    Delete Temp Int. Files, and History. In IE, go to tools> Internet Options> Delete Temp . Int. files, and History. OK.

    Perform Disk Cleanup Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools > Disk Cleanup. Run that first. Run this once a week.

    Run Defrag double click "my computer", right click on "C" drive, left click properties, > tools tab > defrag. Allow that to run, and run it once a month.

    Run Scandisk ( May say CHKDSK still OK, either will be fine.) double click "my computer" > right click on "C" drive, properties > tools tab > error checking. Click run. You will get a notice that this function will need to run on start. Click OK. Now, reboot and it will run. Run this once a month.

    This will free up some much needed space on your HD.

    I would suggest doing these every month, and it will help keep things nice and tidy on your HD. ;)
