Zune, the new digital music player from Microsoft, is not compatible with the software giant's new Vista operating system.

Buried in the Zune website, Microsoft admits that the player is not compatible with Vista and gives no information as to when it will introduce a patch or update enabling the player to do so.

Instead, users are asked to "check back soon for updates".

the bit i find amusing is that this means it wont be a removable device(mass storage), doesnt it ?

Vista isn't out yet, so it doesn't matter.

But when it does come out, then yes it will matter.

Microsoft is most likely gonna make a program that allows Zune to work with Vista, since alot of people are gonna have Vista, so its really nothing to worry about.

Spoken like a true MS man Blade, but sorry to say this defect and others are in Vista, it has been rushed to Market way to fast, think MS's Hype might just have helped doom what could have been a great step forward. Time will tell just how many get Vista, after the intial rush to have the latest has passed. I know that I for one, will wait for about a year before switching. Anybody remember Windows ME.................................

The Zune team and MSFT had been concentrating on the XP version first, understandably as that is th emost used MS operating system at present, plus with Vista having a release date for retail consumers of 30th Jan they had time still to port it across to Vista, which I gather from the scuttlebutt is whats happening now, with a version for Vista RTM already avalable internally for now.

    A hint to the above

and those running non-RTM Vista versions its likely not to be compatible!

Most likely not as iPod is synonymous with portable MP3 players altho if its as good as its touted to be then it will dent Apples monopoly on MP3 players a little.

way way way off topic... what the hell does your avatar say? maybe I need to get my eyes tested again!

Once again, you find Microsoft at it's best.

Despite the fact that yes I do use Windows, its purely for the ease of compatibility, Im far to lazy to bother trying to reconfigure/program things to enable them to work on Linux.

Guess you never read that this will be recified by the time of the public release of Vista as at present this would only affect Business, MSDN, Technet and Connect users who are the only ones to have it. Plus as I actually know and did link to internally at MS they have a working Vista version.

The concentration in development was aimed rightly so at XP which is widely available, with Vista to follow, hope those that fire a broadside at MS for not having a working app at this time with Vista will also aim similar at Symantec, McAfee, Adobe, et al, plus the myriad of 3rd party software and hardware companies that still have not gotten their fingers out to develop updated apps and drivers for Vista!!!!

That's a good point Halo, but I think that the ensuing years since the release of Windows XP, the users, vendors, and program developers, have grown tired of the Hype, the prolonged wait, late patch's to XP, delay's in delivering Beta, changes in Beta, then the rushed delivery with obvious holes remaining in the OS and their policies on it.

I as stated earlier, am really leery of Vista, downloaded the Beta version, and to be honest I did not have the time to even open it, so I can't critique the OS. Having said that I must also admit, that I stuck with DOS, longer than most, something to do with what one is comfortable with and works fine for your requirements.

I just think that Microsoft has missed the mark on this one, the fact that gamers are lining up for the DirectX10 may get it in the mainstream. But I don't think so, Business, Schools, and Baby Boomer's are basically happy with XP will they switch only time will tell.

Then there is the "I Hate MS" crowd, that started with a few rebels back in the 80's and has grown measurable over the past few years, partially fueled by such successful programs as FireFox, Opera, and the Linux OS's, that have chipped away at the core support group of MS user's. Remember the DOS>MAC wars were the "artistic crowd" left DOS for MAC, is that going to happen again with Vista>Linux, were the gamers stay with MS and the rest migrate to Linux.........I don't know, my Crystal Ball has grown as addled as me "Old" brain:D
