Can't update definitions

I've been working on a friends infected computer and have been able to remove much of the malware on it (antivirus2009, backdoor, and many others). I have removed all of the kids games and any programs they don't use. I'm now able to get to sites to download tools (superantispyware, malwarebytes, ccleaner, hijackthis). Have run all of these and removed any issues they found. I have tried to install a new copy of McAfee from cd, it always fails. I've tried to download new definitions for superantispyware and malwarebytes but always get an error that they can't connect to the site.

Any idea what is stopping the definitions update and install of McAfee?

    Attached is a HJT Log.

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given further down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in Safe Mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
    4. Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Sorry, I should of posted that I had already used Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, Ccleaner and Hijackthis before finding your forum. When I started to work on this computer I couldn't even get to the web pages to download these tools. I had to load them onto a USB drive and run them from there. I first used Malwarebytes and then Ccleaner and then I used Superantispyware and Ccleaner again. I found Antivirus 2009, TDSS and Backdoor. Once I used all of these programs I was able to log onto web pages and even get to the pages of these tools. I was not able to update the definitions for any of these programs. I then tried to install McAfee using the internet option, no luck. I also tried in safe mode, no luck. I then tried to install McAfee using the DC only option, no luck. I used Hijackthis fixed some registry item that were associated with TDSS and Antivirus 2009. After all of this I'm still not able to install McAfee. The only log I have now is the HJT I attached with the first posting. Please let me know if there is any other information that would be useful.

See my previous post, the steps in "red" should get your system where you can run the scans.

After following the TDSSserv Non-Plug & Play Driver Disable instructions the computer will not reboot and I get the following Error: stop: c000021a {Fatal System Error}The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000022 (0x00000000 0x0000000)The system has been shutdown.

Have tried Safemode, no luck. Have tried Last known good point, no luck. Can only get to DOS commands.

    Any suggestions?

After you disabled the driver and restarted that's when you got that message, correct?

Does it still give you the error when trying to boot?

Do you have your WinXP disc?

Yes, after disabling the drive I reboot and the computer goes into a loop were it keeps trying to reboot. To see the error message I have to hit f8 and disable auto reboot. Once I do this I can see the message:
    stop: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Session Manager Initialisation system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000022 (0x00000000 0x0000000)
    The system has been shutdown.

Unfortunately, this PC didn't come with a WinXP recovery disc, it has a recovery partition. I have tried to boot in recovery mode, no luck. I have a assess to a second PC that is identical to this PC. It is working and has no malware issues. Could I make a recovery disc from that PC?

I was also thinking of taking the hard drive from the infected PC and installing it into the good one as a slave drive so I could recover the data and then rebuilding the drive. Do you think this would infect the good PC?

    Thanks for the help.

No, because nothing will be loaded as it will be the slave drive. The only way the good pc could be infected is if you accidentally clicked on a EXE file or something and installed it to the good pc.
