    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Morning... I completed all the scans and re-ran Norton. The first time through it showed no signs of the Trojan. Re-Ran it this a.m. just to be sure before proceeding and there it was--still there. While checking the steps to make sure I did everything it occured to me that at the point where you disconnect from the internet (during SuperAntispyware) my computer disconnected and restarted -- un-doing the step where I had set it up to run in msconfig??? Before any one takes the time to read thru logs and analyze, etc. should I just go back to that point, set it up to run in msconfig and run the scans one more time? Thanks again. dbkn

I don't know what you are talking about. You are not supposed to be using MSconfig to control anything. This was in step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. And you don't need to worry if you were not disconnected from the internet while running SAS as this is really only important with certain infections.

Attach you logs from the 1st run as is requested.

Okay it looks like a few things were removed but you have a little more to do.

First you need to disable Spybot's Teatimer as requested in the READ & RUN ME.

Then you need to run the last scan we requested with MGtools.exe and attach the C:\MGlogs.zip file.

OK. I thought I had disabled Spybot's TeaTimer last time... Sorry. Must have done something wrong. Went through the steps to do so again today. Not sure how to say this clearly so bear with me... The instructions in the link for Disable Spybot's TeamTimer tell you to reboot your PC after unchecking TeaTimer and Miscellaneous locks. I did this and when the computer rebooted, before I ran the scan, I looked to make sure TeaTimer and Miscellaneous were still unchecked -- and they were checked again. So this time I unchecked them and ran the scan without rebooting first. Then I reran MGtools. I'm attaching the two logs...hopefully I did it right this time. The computer's running, but trying to get on to the internet and open outlook express/get mail are SLOW and often freezing. OH. And looking over what I did the first time I meant to mention that I have Norton AntiVirus 2009. In step 1 of the Run & Read me it tells you to Empty Norton Nprotect folder. I clicked on the link for instructions but was unable to find any such Nprotect folder on my computer. Alright, enough talking, I'm attaching the new logs. Not sure if you wanted the log from Spybot but it was there- Disregard if useless (like me :) Thanks again.

No we don't need it but that is not a scan log anyway.

    Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger
to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same.
Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right
click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following
lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are
    reading in right now:

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpybotSD TeaTimer] C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in
the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from:
    Sun Java Runtime Environment

Also delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let
you delete the files from the current day
    ).

    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\temp

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now goto this link Using MGtools
and download the new version of MGtools.exe from the black bold print link in the first sentence. Overwrite your
previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't
double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I'm attaching the two logs you requested. I went thru the steps/scans as instructed, then I re-installed the Norton 2009 and ran a complete scan. (Norton is what initially picked up the Trojan.BrisvA virus, and said it had to be removed manually -- that's when I came to you). Norton picked up the virus again tonight and initially said "Processing". It listed it again a few minutes later with the comment "Removed". Did all this time and effort actually pay off??!! (And my family mocked me!) If so I am SOOO greatful!!! Not sure how the computer is running yet, I couldn't wait to get back to you (too excited!), but now I will go back to step 5 of Windows XP Cleaning Procedure How to Protect yourself from Malware and follow the guidelines. Do the Scans I'm sending look good i.e. do I need to do anything else? Two last questions. 1) Do you recommend keeping the scans/programs downloaded and used to get rid of this virus and running them periodically or should I delete them now? and 2) Prior to doing the virus removal I transferred some photographs and documents to disks. Do you think the virus may have moved along with them making them too dangerous to put back on? Once again, Thank you for all your time and help!

    You're welcome.

You were not suppose to rerun MGtools.exe and you should not be running it like this:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\Q7YNAX2V\MGtools[1].exe

The above means you did not download it to c:\MGtools.exe as requested and then run it. It means you Opened/Ran it directly from the website which can lead to things not working properly. Make sure you follow instructions in the future.

We would have to know where it was finding the infection. Names of an infection are not helpful unless we also know where. For all we know it could just have been something in a quarantine or System Restore or could even be a false detection.

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
