Moving .doc and .jpg files off infected drive (new asker)

    Hello there,

I have posted my HJT log to another forum, and am still awaiting a reply (kinda wish I'd found you first).

In the meantime, my question is: can malware move from one machine to another, while doing a folder-by-folder copy of .doc, .xls, and .jpg files (only--no .exes)?

My main machine was malwared, and I have files that I want to be ocd-sure are safe and saved. My laptop is fine (knock wood) and has not been connected to the network cable since the other machine was infected.

My plan would be to open Windows Explorer and copy from there, folder by folder: 'My Pictures (.jpg, .doc, .gif included); 'My Papers' (.doc, .xls, and .jpg); and 'My Spreadsheets' (.xls and .doc). (NOT 'My Documents' as a whole.)

    Is it safe to:

    1) copy the .doc, .xls, and .jpg files from the infected machine to a flash drive and from there to the clean laptop?

    2) connect the laptop to the network cable and copy the .doc, .xls, and .jpg files from infected to clean drive that way?

    3) even *power on* the infected machine until I hear from my helper on the other site (or give up on them, whichever comes first)?

Just like my car (I can drive it, know when to check/change oil & air, know the basic concept of an internal combustion engine, know how many cylinders I've got) I have used PCs, my own and work, constantly since the olden days of the 80's. Not really dumb but ... what I don't know, I REALLY don't know.

    Thanks

PS: I got the list of related posts, but when I clicked on one, I got only the original question, not the answers. Then when I tried to go *back* the list was gone. What am I doing wrong?

If you are being helped on another forum, then you should follow up there.

If you want to have our assistance with the infected machine, then you need to:

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. To avoid addtional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advise that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky Don't Bump! It Only Hurts You!!!. Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.
