    Im running winxp home sp3.Recently my pc has started randomly freezeing up.I am using avira antivirus,but when I scan for virus`s with that,it doesnt find anything.But when I scan with the online trend housecall scanner,it finds a few trojans,and occasionally agobot.worm.It seems to repair these,but when I restart,the freezeing up starts again.Malware bytes finds nothing,and when I run Kaspersky rescue cd,it locks up while scanning.Im assuming this is a virus problem and not hardware related?(ive run memtest,and the memory seems ok)Are there any other good virus/worm/trojan scanners which could help fix this problem?

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First. If TDSSserv is not found, just continue on with the READ & RUN ME.
    READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

    Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Thanks for the reply.I have tried all those progs except combofix.Then someone told me that the problem could be overheating,and to clean out the dust.I did this and there was an incredible amount of dust in there clogging up the fans and ports etc.I cleaned it all out,but when I put it all back together ,it now wont even turn on!I have since discovered that I should have grounded myself first to avoid static problems,which I didnt do.Apart from the plug fuse,and the main switch,which Ive had trouble with before,what other components could have been damaged?Any ideas?

    Ok,I have found the problem with not starting,it was a wire from main switch had come loose during cleaning!Although the pc runs a bit cooler now with dust removed,(gpu is around 52c,compared with 60c before the clean),it is still freezing up randomly.I have followed your instructions with the winxp cleaning,and unfortunately,SuperAntiSpware locks up during scanning,even in safe mode,and even with the kernel options unticked.MGTools also was freezing up during scanning,but that worked ok in safe mode.So here are the logs from the 4 other programs.Hope this helps find the problem..

    Let's see if doing this helps.

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    cuiwdde
    pnicml

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\sav87312.sys
    c:\windows\system32\sav970451.sys
    c:\windows\system32\sav950231.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\DUMP3a88.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\Avg(2)
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\oomdz.sys
    c:\docume~1\Quad\LOCALS~1\Temp\pnicml.sys

    Folder::
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg8(2)
    C:\Program Files\AVG(2)

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    [IMG]
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Ive had a couple of bsod`s in the last couple of days aswell as the freezes,debugging the memory dumps pointed to file ntkrpamp.exe as possible culprit,any ideas what this is?
    I will see how pc runs now and let you know,thanks again.

    That was about removing the infections as well as the leftover files/folders from AVG(2).

    You need to just do this:
    Use windows explorer to find and delete:
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\Avg(2)

    Your logs are clean. I would suggest you post in the software forum regarding your BSOD issues.
    You can check to see if the ntkrpamp.exe is in the Driver Cache\i386.

    Did you at one time have BitDefender installed?

    In the meantime, If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners.They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    ok,I have deleted that avg2 folder,and done everything else.The day after I did all this the freeze ups were still happening,but yesterday the pc was on all day and only froze once when I tried to restart it.So it seems to be getting better.Maybe this problem has several causes,and some have been solved.The one thing that makes me think the problem its hardware related is,it NEVER locks up within 1-2 hours of running pc from cold.Only when its warmed up.As far as I know I have not installed BitDefender,but Im not 100%!Its possible I may have tried once ages ago,and forgotten.I`ll run pc for a few days and see how things go,if they continue,I`ll probably format,and fresh OS install.Then if the problems continue,I`ll know they are hardware related.Thanks for the help in cleaning my system,hope things get better now. :cool

    Then from what you describe, I would tend to think it may be a heat issue.

    And you are most welcome...safe surfing. :)

    Just to update..I wiped everything off,installed fresh OS,and the problems continued.Eventually I took it to a repair place,they quickly found the problem to be ram related.The memory sticks themselves are fine,but theres a problem with the slots,which will no longer support 2gb sticks,only 1gb sticks.
