I downloaded the White Smoke software and got a nasty virus. I ran Malwarebytes, Super Anti-Spyware, Avast, and Spysweeper. Only Malwarebytes and Super Anti-Spyware got rid of the malware, but my computers still has slow performance so I ran Combofix.

The Combofix log reads " PhysicalDrive0 - Bootkit TDL4 was found and disinfected" Does that mean I had a rootkit? Do I need to change all of my passwords? Please advise.

Please see my Comofix log and please let me know if my computer is clean

    Thanks in advance

You need to make sure you have followed all of the below procedures.

I want you to run TDSSKiller so refer to the below for how to do so.

    TDSSkiller - How to run

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Attach logs when ready.

    MGtools – Log is attached

Background Information and How I got the virus:

In spite of warnings from the website WOT, I decided to purchase the software program White Smoke to help me improve my grammar.

After chatting with a White Smoke customer service representative on their official website page. “Ryan” assured me that the software was safe a certified by various anti-virus software companies such as AVG. He said that there was a virus called White Smoke out there and it resulted in a false positive reading.

I read a few more reviews online at different websites (many were positive) so I went ahead and bought it. I scanned the software before I download it in with Malwarebytes, Avast, and Spysweeper and everything came back fine. After a week I started getting flashy pop up ads prompting me to upgrade my subscription. It was annoying so I contacted White Smoke again and they took care of the problem.

About a few weeks later I noticed changes with my computer performance. The system slowed and my Firefox and chrome browser kept crashing. At first I thought it was a result of too many add-ons but my computer performance kept getting worse. So I did a scan using Malwarebytes and it detected about 50 malware hits titled “White Smoke”. I cleaned but noticed my computer was still slow so I did a Super Antispyware scan which found even more malware. I noticed my system performance improved but not back to normal

After I scan my system using Avast, Spywear Sweeper, and Spybot I posted my program on Majorgeeks. After completed all the steps you outlined I want to be sure that there is not any malware lingering in the background.

Thanks in advance for your time and effort. I appreciate it.

Are you using the AV portion of Comodo? You are probably being slowed down because you have both Comodo and Avast installed, unless you are only using the Firewall part of Comodo.

I am not seeing any malware in your logs. But do this:

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop

    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...

    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:

    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message.

Thanks for the timely response TimW.

To answer your question no I don't use the AV portion of Comodo, only the firewall.

I will be back shortly with a MBRCheck log attachment.

Does your copy of Comodo internet security have the antivirus activated or just the firewall? I ask because I also see spysweeper installed and wondered if you had that antivirus active too. Then I am also seeing avast! Pro Antivirus! You need to use one antivirus only and uninstall any other.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    • R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)#
    • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    • O23 - Service: iYogi Hit Agent (iYogiURLHit.exe) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\iYogi SupportDock\Services\URLHit\iYogiURLHit.exe (file missing)
    • O23 - Service: iYogi Communication Agent (SupportDockClientService.exe) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\iYogi SupportDock\Services\CommAgent\SupportDockClientService.exe (file missing)

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    iYogiURLHit.exe
    SupportDockClientService.exe
    Folder::
    c:\program files\iYogi SupportDock

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

You need to use the Recovery Console to fix your MBR. Do you have your installation disc?

Now boot to the Recovery Console and run the fixmbr to clear a Master Boot Record infection that you have.

You can read the below to help you do this:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

Then boot back into normal mode.

Then re-run MBRCheck and attach the new log.

    Kestrel13,

I only downloaded the Comodo firewall I was careful not to get the anti-virus/anti-spyware package as I did not want it to conflict with Avast Anti-virus and Spysweeper.

    TimW,

I think I misplace my installation disc :-o

    Tim W & Kestrel 13 -

If I boot the recovery console, will I still need to run HJT and Combofix as instructed by Kestrel 13?

    Thanks again

Yes, you still need to do the fix that Kes gave you. Do you have the Recovery Console installed? I can give you a link to create a Recovery Console disc if you don't.

I have found my reinstallation disk. I am about to read the instructions on the MS page on how to use the recovery console. Please let me know if you have any further instructions.

    Thanks

I tried to install the Recovery console from the CD and this is the message I got:

“Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD. To erase the newer version and install older version, restart the computer, boot form this CD, and follow the instructions for a new installation.”

I have read the different options on the MS page, but I am still not sure about what to do. I want to be careful.

    Please advise.

You don't need to "install" the Recovery Console. All you need to do is to boot to the cd and choice "R" which should take you into the Recovery console. Then you can enter fixmbr and hit enter again. Then reboot into normal mode and re-run MBRCheck.

I went to the BIOS, hit f12, and selected boot to CD. I got a message that read "boot not available" :(

Am I doing anything wrong? How do I boot to the CD properly? Please advise

Before we proceed any further, tell me how things are running. Are you having any malware issues still? What kind of computer is this? Dell, HP, etc?

  17. Key5

    Key5 Private E-2

It's a Dell Desktop computer (purchased in 2004).

It is running faster than it did before but...

Thursday I had the blue screen of death. After I restarted the computer I got a "corruption error" report from Microsoft, and my browsers crash every now and then.

I have not done any scans for malware since my last log post. Which scan should a run to check for malware issues now?

    Thanks

We're pretty sure that it is because it is a Dell that you are getting the "unknown" MBR message. I would like you to finish what Kestrel last posted and get the new Combo and MGLogs.zip attached.

Combo reported it fixed the MBR, so please re-run MBRCheck and attach that logs. Tell me what issues you are still having. I also would like to see a new MGLogs.zip. Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Can you boot into safe mode? Do you get a BSOD in safe mode? You never attached the lastest MGLogs.zip.

To see the BSOD, right click My Computer / properties / advanced / start up and recovery / and uncheck the box to restart on errors.

Let us know what the exact BSOD message is.
