Programs I have installed on my Vista home premium computer will not auto update. Examples are ad-aware, belarc, super antispyware, etc.

I have been advised that this may be due to a trojan horse.

I am going through the cleaning procedure recommended by this site. all was proceding fine until I tried to install Spybot from my desktop. Received an error message when the installer tried to establish a connection with the server to download additional files. I am now dead in the water.

I re downloaded and tried to install. Same problem.

These programs do not automatically update. You have to update them yourself. Ad-aware is not worth using anyway so I suggest you just uninstall it. For BelArc, just download and install the new version. For SUPERAntiSpyware (aka SAS), click the check for Updates button to install new database versions but this will not update the core program itself to the new version which is what I consider a design deficiency. The program itself should also be updated when a new version is available. Thus to truly get the current version of SAS installed when a new version is out, you must uninstall the old version and then install the new version which is available here: SUPERAntiSpyware

Are you using a proxy to connect to the internet? If so, you need to configure programs to use your proxy to connect in order to get updates.

Sorry, I misspoke on my original post. The problem is that these programs, when opened, can not update definitions or download other files after I have pressed the update button. I get a dialog box that says "check your internet connection".

Another example of something similar was Spybot. I downloaded setup, ran it and receive a request to connect to the server for additional files. I pressed the ok and got the dialog box above. So, I can't even install spybot. It's frustrating.

Okay so I repeat my question:
Another possibility would be that you are blocking the programs with your firewall.

I am not using a proxy and I have shutdown my windows firewall. No help.

Relating to this an odd thing happened two days ago. I thought I had possible traces of comodo firewall in my registry. I had uninstalled it several months ago. Went to comodo site and downloaded a batch file to eliminate the traces. Ran the file and received a confirmation that the traces were gone. After that, I couldn't connect to the internet. Went round n round with my ISP with no luck. Finally decided to restore the system to a point prior to running the batch file. No problem connecting.

Maybe comodo is the source of my problem. But how to fix?

At this point all I can suggest is that you run our cleaning procedures so we can see if you are having malware problems. There are instructions in these procedures for getting manual updates for SAS, MBAM and Spybot.

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.
