a friend of mines had a virus(I'm assuming) and I hook(usb style) my camera to their computer. I notice that everytime I 'click on the 'drives' that belong to my camera/ the antivirus pops up, so I formated the camera... and It still pops up everytime

I updated avast manually and did a boot time scan. The pop up doesn't come up anymore, but I'm wondering about the camera. Now when I plug the camera into my laptop, avast doesn't come on and It never did for the laptop.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. To avoid addtional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advise that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky Don't Bump! It Only Hurts You!!!. Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

I will post the scan results in another window I guess... there is a rule for only 3attachments I believe.

so I manually updated windows defender; it had been off for a while in order to defeat the security center popping up(remember this computer is not connected to the internet) and right away it detected viruses.

I also manually downloading and ran the malicious software removal tool/ same results

combo fix also found and removed items. I will attach that log in the next post...
after that I ran superanti spyware and it found nothing
I ran ccleaner, did a system restore toggle and restart.
    everything seems to be fine....
let me know if you think there is more that I should do....
thanks in advance... I do believe I caught this from installing my camera into a computer that was infected. could you comment on the ability of computers jumping from a computer to usb installed devices.:major

Yes, please do, I would like to see that as well as a log from running MGTools.exe, and MBAM. You've been here before so you know how this works.

    Yes this is indeed possible.

Use windows Search to look for autorun.inf and report back to me what results turn up, and don't forget to attach me some logs, as I am unable to assist you until you do that.

    Thanks

sorry about that... my internet connection was lost temporarily....

:majorthere is a folder called Qoobox located in the c:/Qoobox, I'm wondering if I should just delete it? I know that it's apart of combofix, but I'm still not sure if I just delete it or not.

and If windows defender says it has quarantined the virus, should I delete the virus or let it stay in quarantine?
and could you tell me what if anything do you know about this kind of virus and how did I probably catch it? is it a new one?

I will post the mbam and mgtools log in the next post

it is the quarantine folder for combofix yes, and you should not delete it until I give you the all clean and final steps because if combofix was to remove something by mistake then I can give you instructions to restore the file from the backup folder. Leave it alone for now.

Give me the name of the virus and it's full path where it resides.

Can tell you more when I've been thru all the logs ;) I'll be here waiting

    Kes :)

the screenshot(see screenshot #4) gives the path and name of the location of the virus as desribed by windows defender.....

thanks... I've had no pop ups in a while now...

    what do you think?

alright.... so I ran a spybot scan after I manually updated the database.... I also did the same similar thing on my laptop. everything seems to be fine.
did you see anything or any further instructions?

  13. Kestrel13!

Kestrel13! Super Malware Fighter - Major Dilemma Staff Member

    Yes :)

    1) You are way out of date with your version of SUPERAntiSpyware. So just to be safe, you should get the current version installed and run a new scan. It may come up clean but it is better to be safe than sorry.

    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this new log.

    2) Also please go to Add or Remove Programs and uninstall ViewPoint Media Player as requested per step 1 of the R&R.

    3) Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: HP Print Enhancer - {0347C33E-8762-4905-BF09-768834316C61} - (no file)
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [DWQueuedReporting] "C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\DW\dwtrig20.exe" -t (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [DWQueuedReporting] "C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\DW\dwtrig20.exe" -t (User 'Default user') <---NOTE: this is NOT malware. It relates to Dr Watson which is a program error debugger for Windows, but there is no need for it to be running at start-up so include it in our fix.

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    4) Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.

    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it
(make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:

    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\f9cvum.exe
    J:\f9cvum.exe
    I:\f9cvum.exe

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{0347C33E-8762-4905-BF09-768834316C61}]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3014/3035535531_512f04c6a2_o.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    5) Ensure that you search all removable devices and delete f9cvum.exe if found.

    6) Now Run Ccleaner!

    7) Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix and SUPERANTIspyware

Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now.

    Thanks
    Kes

Don't delete anything until we have finished, especially the below directory:
Qoobox <--- It's Combofix's quarantine folder and if CF happened to remove something it shouldn't we can easily restore it back to it's original location from there. I'll post again soon to let you know if all's okay, I am still under supervision so please forgive any delay :)

    Thanks

Hi there, your logs are clean.
    • Please be sure to search all removable devices and drives for f9cvum.exe and delete if found.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Alrighty then.... I searched all removable devices and drives for f9cvum.exe and delete it where necessary.

I Copied the text and saved it as fixME.reg on my desktop, clicked on it and ....voila... success!

I have only one question/comment/concern.... When I look at my Device Manager, I notice this: see attachment....
I don't know what device is missing. The Computer seems to run fine.:major:confused

I do apologise but I think you'd be better off asking the guys and gals in software regarding anything non malware related :)

    Glad to hear it!

    Take care
