So I downloaded a software online, tried to run it and i got a bunch of problems and trojans, 6 shortcuts appeared on my desktop, favorites in IE and the favorite section of the all programs (in the start menu). a bunch of exe also appeared on my c dirve.

when the I booted the system the file explorer will open on is own, and then start to shutdown my pc.

I got into the safe mode, upgraded my Virus definition and some of my spyware and malware tools, and I cleaned everything i was able to.

my antivirus detected 15 trojans and downloaders, which i deleted. but now when I tried to reboot, I can't get pass my welcome screen. i tried safe mode with and without networking, and I can't get pass the welcome screen as my user or the admin user.

I was getting ready to install HijackThis but I can't login.

    Help please.

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given further down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in Safe Mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
    4. Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    HI all.

I finally managed to successfully start my system and managed to get things done.

I got everything installed and working. I have attached all the logs I have. the only thing that doesn't run is the Malwarebytes Anti_malware. not sure what is blocking it.

my anti virus still pops up and catches a few things here and there and I still see some weird things running on my system.

please let me know what my logs show and how to fix or if i need to try a different Malware.

    [EDIT]
I forgot to mention that. firefox is now also infected.not sure if it shows up in the logs. but megaupload has taken over firefox and I can't really find anything, my browser doesn't work. [/EDIT]

I see that you did not download and run ComboFix. Is there a reason for this? We need this log and we may need ComboFix to help us locate and remove any remaining malware.

Also what is C:\Program Files\LanqiEngine which showed up on Feb 14th right before all your problems appear to have started?

I'm sorry I forgot to mention that I can't get ComboFix to launch on my computer, not even in Safe Mode.

and I'm not sure what that file is LanqiEngine

I did not even see the file saved to your Desktop which is where it needs to be downloaded to. Did you download it? Download it to your Desktop now and then shutdown your antivirus program and try to run it. If it does not run in normal boot mode then boot into safe mode and try to run it.

You are very badly/seriously infected. Are you sure this is just from trying to download one file. You have a ton of problems. Some/many system files may be infected.

Whether ComboFix runs or not, continue on with the below.

    What are the below for?
    O18 - Protocol: ebahn - {8D32BA61-D15B-11D4-894B-000000000000} - C:\Program Files\eBahn\hsppp.dll

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\fady\Local Settings\Temp

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

let me try to answer the questions in order.

Figured out how to fix ComboFix.exe, I had to add a second ".exe" to the file. then it run nicely. so now I have the files and I will attach them.

I guess this is not all from one installer. maybe things have been accumulating over time and then it all came down in one shot at the end.

ebahn is the electronic version of my car manual. its the software.

after running analyse.exe from MGTools, I only found about 4 of all the files you mentioned (maybe tha'ts cause of ComboFix, sorry I didn't get their names)

    the registry editing worked.

I run everything else you mentioned.

things r slightly better i think. FireFox now will let me view java pop-ups without trying to open a new browser (example yahoo's image safe search setting pop-up). it also now displays users for the programs in the task manager as before it used to be blank. I can't bring task manager up right now, maybe something I run or CCLeaner disabled it for my user (I can fix that) now my desktop image is a warning that my system might be infected.

I hope all of this is helpful and we can move forward.

thank you very much for all the help you have provided me till now.

You still have a ton of problems. Bad infections like this often take some repetition to get cleaned up. The infected Windows system files that you have may become an issue. Do you have your Windows XP boot CD?

Okay let's continue with your cleanup.

Download HostsXpert and then follow the below steps.
    • Unzip HostsXpert.zip
    • It will create a folder named HostsXpert in whatever folder you extract it to.
    • Run HostsXpert.exe by double clicking on it.
    • Click the Make Writeable? button. (if you only see a Make Read-Only selection, it is already writeable so skip this button).
    • Click Restore Microsoft's Hosts File and then click OK.
    • Click the X to exit the program
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,C:\windows\system32\twex.exe,

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now click Start, Run, and enter notepad c:\windows\win.ini into the run box and click OK. This should open up your win.ini file in notepad. Scroll down to where you find the below lines and delete these lines:
Then click File, Save to save the changes.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now goto this link Using MGtools and download the new version of MGtools.exe from the black bold print link in the first sentence. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

So apparently, I was gonna need the Windows CD sooner than I thought. After I do the ComboFix, it asks me for the Windows CD to repair some files, but the time I got the CD ComboFix rebooted the server. and now I can' get passes the Windows loading page not even in safe mode. The blue screen that comes up, goes away and reboots too fast all i catch is that something is wrong with a dll file.

I have the Windows CD and I can reboot into it. can I fix something from there or do something to be able to log back into windows.

I hope that this doesn't mean the end of this repair and I need to reinstall.

    Thanks for all your help.

more info on the blue screen of reboot and what I've tried.

the message i get is :

Stop: c0000139 { Entry Point Not Found} The procedure entry point GdiGetBitmapBitssize could not be located in the dynamic link library Gdi32.dll.

I've tried replacing gdi32.dll from the cd but no luck still comes up.

    any ideas?

Okay this is occurring due to the infection that had spread into your Windows System files and possibly many other executable files on the PC.

Your best bet at this point is to try the procedure mention in the below to restore an older registry hive if any exist:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307545&sd=tech

If the above does not help, you can try to perform a a nondestructive, no-reformat reinstall of Windows which the below article can guide you thru:

    http://www.informationweek.com/news/windows/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=189400897

The below is a quote from the end of the above procedure:

  13. fn1982

    fn1982 Private E-2

I'm sorry to report that nothing of the above has worked. I tried the first process with no success after the reboot, I'm suppose to be able to login to windows but no luck same error about gdi32.dll.

and the second option, where I'm suppose to be able to repair for some reason doesn't exit. I'm either using the wrong XP CD or something else might be skipping my mind.

I guess my only options are to reinstall windows. I beleive i don't have anything i need o nthe C drive (I have D and E) so I can do a final check and if there is nothing there I guess I should just format C and reinstall Windows.

What do you guys think, will this fix it all. This is the last thing I wanted to do but I think I'm out of options now.

    opinions thoughts.

What registry hive date did you restore to? Go further back.

That is where things are heading if the above does not work. If you wish to safe some time, you can just bite the bullet and reinstall.

  15. fn1982

    fn1982 Private E-2

I'm having no luck with anything.

I think, I'm just gonna cut my losses and Reinstall. I need to check if I'm formatting and installing or just installing (depends on how much data is in the C drive)

in both cases. What software do u suggest that I start running and keep running on my system from now on. SpyWare, AdWare. free is preferable as long as the tools keep running, updating and constantly checking.

Thank you for all the help. I wish the ending was better but this story is ending this way.

I recommend a complete format and reinstall from scratch based on the infections that were present. Otherwise you could still be infected if you simply try a repair install.

What we recommend is in the below sticky thread:

How to Protect yourself from malware!

  17. fn1982

    fn1982 Private E-2

well Thank you for all the help. I have reformatted the drive and reinstalled windows, installed all the recommended software. and created a ghost image of the c drive. that should help in the future.

now another question, I still haven't searched on the site, but I'm looking for software to limit the guest user from accessing drivers and programs. Just allow them to surf the web on FF (some sites), use MS Office, and have one folder to store their items. I will be checking the site to see if there is any recommendations. do you have any, do u know of any, free is preferable, low cost is acceptable.

See this again: How to Protect yourself from malware!

The Guest account should be disabled. Create Restricted User accounts for what you want to do. You can also create Policies to have further or fewer restrictions. This is a topic you can discuss in more detail in the Software Forum.
