I finished combofix and everything appears ok but I wanted help with the results but I am overwhelmed, intimidated, and probably rude for not reading every post.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

I'm sorry but we do not work from only a ComboFix log as it is not a comprehensive malware scanner or removal tool. So if you are having malware problems or want to know if your PC is clean, you will need to run our full cleaning procedure given below.

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    hi
the link from major attitude looks very old, and says so
ccleaner is old, is it still valid?
The directions do not follow, as in there is not a simple open ccleaner
it is a series of paths landing at jason somebody's review or other things like flags waving from texas or florida
these are warning signs, when directions are not crystal clear, but convoluted and ambiguous, I get nervous
surely i am not alone here,
what if major attitude reviewed his directions from a nervous rookies perspective, would it ask so much of his busy schedule to review and comment of the series of intricated manuevers,
company halt! about face, and review
    thankyou for some attention

my last post sounds ungrateful and childish, I apologize for critiquing or judging major attitudes schedule

You need to follow the instructions if you have malware problems that you need help with. The date that the thread was created has nothing to do with the last time the instructions were updated by MY MESSAGE. They are current and used about a 1000 times per week. If you were referring to the link titled Basic computer maintenance everyone should do which is by Major Attitude then you are not doing what you need to do to remove malware. As stated in the READ & RUN ME, those instructions are there for people having slow PC problems.

The CClearer link works just fine (in both the READ & RUN ME link and in the Basic computer maintenance link). You need to download the tool and then install it and run it like you would any program.

    hi
I have completed all aspects and appear to be good, altho i have not as yet attached any logs as I have waited awhile to see if I am still good.

If you still have any infections, waiting is not a good idea. The best approach is to simply attach the 4 requested logs as soon as you finish the cleaning procedure. Then we will check them to see if you are really clean.

For future reference, your SAS and MBAM logs will always be located in the below folders. You can see your last logs listed.
    Code:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\Pablo\Application Data\SUPERAntiSpyware.com\SUPERAntiSpyware\Logs\"
    Feb 14 2009 696 "SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log - 02-14-2009 - 10-05-57.log"
    "C:\Documents and Settings\Pablo\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\"
    Feb 14 2009 834 "mbam-log-2009-02-14 (13-57-57).txt"

We will not need your SAS log now since the size reveals nothing was found.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
AVG 7.5 <-- You already have AVG8 installed.
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - Cmdmapping - (no file) (HKCU)
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: tsjjqd.dll

NOTE: HJT may popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

your sun java link doesn't work and the sun java website asks me to disable my firewall, whereupon i did and the installation said it could not continue because of my current settings,
so i await your direction, no problems otherwise noted

It works just fine. You need to make sure you are clicking on one of the download links which are under the http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/DOWNLOADS.gif icon.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Did it say anything more than this? Was it complaining about administration priviledges?

Please complete the rest of the instructions anyway even if you cannot get the new Sun Java installed.

    CFscript.txt saved as 'KILLALL'
    is that correct?
    I didn't find the combofix.txt

i just figgured out how to get rid of messenger
when i drag CFscript to combofix, it pops up, CFscript may have been misspelled, then quits.

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

No!!! It is saved exactly like I specified. And that is as CFscript.txt. What you saved on your Desktop was KILLALL.URL which is not what I asked you to do. You need to follow the instructions properly and then attach all new logs from ComboFix and MGtools

You're welcome. Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

everything has run well, but with the spybot I enabled teatimer, does that explain a new hoaxlike program that seems to be identifying supposed threats?

  20. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

I don't know what you mean by a new hoaxlike program. If you are referring to Spybot's Teatimer popping up to block changes, that is what Teatimer does.

  21. sxophn

    sxophn Private E-2

thank-you for that information on teatimer, will it be advantageous to remove teatimer? I had a popup ad saying I had a computer infection, it seemed bogus, thats what i meant by hoaxlike, when i hit the x in the corner to remove it, it started flying thru some kind of scan, and i managed to close it completely in a second or two. afterwards i ran superantispyware and updated avg and have not seen a problem since.

  22. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

You will see in the READ & RUN ME and also in the How to protect yourself from malware links that we don't recommend using Teatimer.

Everything has worked well, I am curious if I need AVG Internet Security. I have Spybot and Superantispyware protection and AVG wants to renew my subscription, but I wonder if it is necessary.

  24. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

You did not have AVG Internet Security suite installed according to your logs. You just have AVG8.0 installed which is way out of date and why they are probably telling you to renew. Are you referring to a paid version or the free version which expires every year. You don't have any protection with the free SUPERAntiSpyware that you are using. It is just an after the fact scanner which is a much much much much better scanner than Spybot which is very poor.

But yes you need AVG or similar since you need to have an antivirus. AVG also includes an antispyware program which is most likely superior to Spybot's Teatimer. You also need to have a real firewall as stated in the link I gave because the Windows firewall is very poor.
