Trojan/Virus problems

I have a virus or trojan which prevents me from accessing web sites such as AVG, Mcafee, Microsoft and some of the tools you recommend for me to download.

I am running a Dell PC on WIndows XP with the useless Mcafee running in the background. I cannot call up Mcafee to turn it off or access its web pages. The only thing I can do I suppose is disable it.

A friend has given me Malware and Superantispyware and I have run them several times and have attached the logs. As I am unable to download everything you recommend, I am not sure where to begin.

I have also been given rootrepeal and attach a report for you to review.

I have an external hard drive with a backup via Acronis - how do I know if this is infected or not? and I have a Mozy on line backup too.

    Help would be greatly appreciated.

You must attach items as text files not documents.

Were you able to run MGTools.exe? If not why not? Please explain.

Were you able to run TDSSKiller?

I want you to run TDSSKiller so refer to the below for how to do so.

    TDSSkiller - How to run

This process is a real struggle as connectivity to the internet is becoming worse.

However I have run MG Tools and it has produced loads of text files and I don't know what is needed.

I have also run TDSSKiller.exe which has produced a report but as far as I can tell nothing has happened of a positive note.

I have attached some text files.

Let me know what to do next.

    Thanks
    Ronny

Yes and you do not need to attach individual files because there is a whole folder which I want to see ---> C:\MGlogs.zip. Please attach that. :)

As requested the MG zip file
    Hope this illuminates the problem.

Just a clarification...... MGlogs.zip is a file not a folder. It is a zip file which is a compressed archive that can contain many files and folders. ;)

Note: You need to put your PC into Normal Startup mode as requested in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME. You should not be using MSconfig to control startups like this.

    Uninstall the below software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstalled in step 5 of the READ ME

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\Program Files\jettpbll\rklgabuc.exe,
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {AF69DE43-7D58-4638-B6FA-CE66B5AD205D} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C84D72FE-E17D-4195-BB24-76C02E2E7C4E} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up because you recieve the following error: Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion then you will need to reboot your computer which will normally fix this problem.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi,

I am unable to download the Combofix files on my PC or on another PC I have in the house. Can you email it to me or suggest an alternative route as this is obviously a critical step?

    :(

    Hi

I have managed to download (hiding it inside the AOL download window) which means that I am going to attempt the next stages.

    Fingers crossed

Don't know if this is normal, but Combofix.exe has been running for 3.5 hours and is currently stuck at 98.4% on the second line of whatever it is doing. Is this ok?

Your MGLogs.zip is virtually empty. Did you allow it to run until completion?

Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).Make sure that you watch for the license agreement for TrendMicro HijackThis and click on the Accept button TWICE to accept ( yes twice ).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\Avenger.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Note: This appears to be a Ramnit infection and a reinstall will likely be required. See our standard boilerplate below.

If this is a Ramnit infection as Chaslang suggests, you can confirm it by doing an Eset scan.
    eSet Online Scan.

Oh it is a Ramnit infection for sure. The files we have been trying to delete already reveal that and you can also see the below in the winfiles.txt log:

    C:\WINDOWS\Explorermgr.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wscntfymgr.exe

Those are definitely from the Ramnit infection. However the Eset Scan may give an idea for how much it has spread.

I cannot access Eset scanner so I think a complete reinstall is the best route. I have a key question though. I backup to an external hard drive using Acronis,
so I want to be sure that the backup is safe from infection. How can I tell that?

Then, assuming it is safe, what do I do to reinstall

Is it a case of format the hard drive - (how?) and then how do I get Acronis onto the PC given that it will be wiped and I won't have internet access?

    All thoughts greatly appreciated?

What happened with Eset? Why could you not run it?

You will need your OS disc to reformat and reinstall. I would be very hesitant to use your external drive until you can do an Eset scan with it plugged in. You may have backed up some of the infected files.

If you are uncertain about how to reformat and reinstall, post in the software forum for additional assistance.

When I try to connect to certain internet sites it simply tells me that there is a diagnostic error. I get the same message with Microsoft, McAfee and other such websites. It simply does not allow access.

It feels like I am in a very dark place right now as I am concerned about my backups too

Yes, that is why you need to unplug your backup drive, reformat your C: drive and reinstall. Once done, install all your protection software, update it and then see if you can't do an Eset scan with the external plugged in. It's the only way to tell if the external has infected files on it.

Many thanks to those who helped me. In the end, the best solution save for reformatting hard disk was a tool I downloaded called Microsoft Security Essentials which identified and dealt with the Ramnit virus. Fingers crossed this is the end of the troubles but I will keep a wary eye on the behaviour of my PC.

Ramnit is a very difficult infection to remove. Please do one more thing for me:

    eSet Online Scan.

  23. NoBlackPepper

    NoBlackPepper Private E-2

I ran Eset scan and it found one infected file which it deleted, not necessarily a Ramnit file as it seemed to be a file name I hadn't seen before. Unfortunately I didn't write down the name and I can't remember exactly what it was.

Do you think I am in the clear now?

FYI: Multiple antivirus programs are now installed! All but one has to be uninstalled.

  29. NoBlackPepper

    NoBlackPepper Private E-2

I have MacAfee and MSE running together and Malaware too. Do you mean I need to uninstall to run the tests COmbofix.exe etc? I did suspend the various AV programmes but not sure how succesful that was.

Or did you mean Ishould only have one AV progr running at any one time?

  30. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

You should only have one AV program installed. Keep McAfee but uninstall MSE.

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
