I saw a post about this same thing already, but I want to make sure I'm going about it the right way. I've done all the Read Me tools and the logs are below. Please let me know what I need to do next to get rid of this thing.

    Thanks,
    Chris

And here is the screenshot of MSSE in case it helps.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Your problem is an infected partition that was added to your hard disk
    Code:
Get Partition Info From WMI in K-bytes
    ==============================================================
    Bootable Name Size Type
TRUE Disk #0, Partition #0 238417933824 Installable File System
FALSE Disk #0, Partition #1 11639193600 Installable File System
    [B][COLOR=red]FALSE     Disk #0, Partition #2  2182144       Unknown[/COLOR][/B]

Do you have your Vista boot DVD?

We have to removed this infected partition and then we are going to need to boot to the Vista Recovery Environment to run some repairs.

Also run the below right now. I know you ran TDSSkiller already, but I want to make sure those items you deleted were actually deleted.

Goto the below link and follow the instructions for running TDSSKiller from Kaspersky
    • Be sure to attach your log from TDSSKiller
Now please also download MBRCheck to your desktop.

See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Thanks for the welcome. I've been fixing peoples PC's for longer than I can remember at this point. This is probably the first time I ran into a problem fixing one. I appreciate all your time and effort.

I have a Vista disk and a Win7 disk, but I don't have the actual Vista disk as HP doesn't provide one. I'm assuming that the recovery partition isn't working because of this problem as well. I've attached the logs below. TDS didn't pick up anything this time even though MSSE still has the warning up.

Note: The last TDS log was the very first one I ran. That was the only time it picked up the problem.

    Thanks,
    Chris

Yes MSE is telling you it is the 3rd partition of the harddisk. See the snapshot you attached. ;) This partition needs to be deleted. Since it was not made active ( like the infection sometimes does ) the final steps with the Vista Recovery Environment to fix the MBR and boot may not even be necessary. But I will put them here for completeness.

I need you to download: gparted-live-0.11.0-7.iso (114 MB)

Create a bootable CD for GParted. You can useImgBurn to accomplish this.
If you need help on how to use ImgBurn, please view this guide by dr.m -- Using ImageBurn to Burn an ISO image

Now boot off of the newly created GParted CD.
    http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/6546/gpartedsplash01107.th.png
    You should be here...
    Press ENTER
    http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/7286/gpartedkeymaps.th.png
By default, do not touch keymap is highlighted. Leave this setting alone and just press ENTER.
    http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/9840/gpartedlanguage.th.png
Choose your language and press ENTER. English is default [33]
    http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/7958/gpartedgui.th.png
Once again, at this prompt, press ENTER
You will now be taken to the main GUI screen below
    http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/1122/gpartedo.th.png
According to your logs, the partition that you want to delete is 2.08 MiB (2.08 MB)
Click the trash can icon to delete and then click Apply.
You should now be here confirming your actions:
    http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/1533/gpartedsteps.th.png
    Now you should be here:
    http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/8471/gpartedsuccessclose.th.png
Is boot next to your OS drive? According to your logs, your OS drive is the 222.04 GB sized partition.
    http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/7753/gpartedboot.th.png
If boot is not next to your OS drive under Flags, right-mouse click the OS drive while in Gparted and select Manage Flags
In the menu that pops up, place a checkmark in boot like the picture below:
    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/3483/gpartedmanageflagsboot.th.png
Now press the Close button to save these changes.
    Now double-click the http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/641/gpartedexit.png button.
You should receive a small pop up like this:
    http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/8986/gpartedexitreboot.png
Choose reboot and then press OK.

Now reboot from the Windows Vista Recovery Disc and execute the following commands:
    • bootrec /fixmbr
    • bootrec /fixboot
    • exit
    Once back in Windows...

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
And also see if MSE is still detecting the problem of not.

I think these pipes are CLEAN!!!!

The MSSE house is green :)

Let me know about the log but I think we might be all set.

    Thanx again,
    Chris

You're welcome. Your logs are good now.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Awesome. Thanks. If you have time at some point, I'd like to know what you are looking at so I can further help others. 99% malwarebytes fixes most of the problems that I help people out with. Oh, and I think the instructions in the READ ME might need some fine tuning. I noticed the discrepancies when I was running them. Just wording or where to click. Might just be cause some of the software is newer.....I'm not sure. Just wanted to pass on the word.

    Thanks again,
    Chris

You will find this not to be the case for malware removal forums like this. While MBAM is quite useful, by itself it does not even fully cure 10% of the problems we are getting. These days, most of the troublesome infections require manual intervention just like your problem did. If you want to fully learn about malware removal and the tools being used, see the below:

    Becoming A Malware Forum Helper

Yes thanks, we know and have been working on it as time permits. In fact yesterday evening, I had finally finished an inprogress total rewrite of this
procedure to conform with the newer versions.
