A version of the google redirect bug?

    Yesterday I picked up an old favorite of mine, the "anti-virus 2009". I was able to close everything down, run both "Malwarebytes" and "super antispyware" which seemed to get most of it. I should also note, both were updated prior to running. A final "Antivir" scan and reboot later I assumed I was in the clear. However, I noticed that I was still having my google searches redirected, as well as periodical pop-ups.

    I looked up several sites, including this one, and they either advised me to run the programs I already had, or gave specific instructions to hunt down a nonplug and play applications in the hardware list. I did scan over the list, but did not find the application they mentioned.

    I've come to the conclusion that perhaps I need to seek specific guidance to solve this problem, and thusly find myself posting here. I appreciate any and all time dedicated to this, and greatly appreciate your aid.

    -=UPDATE=-
    I forgot to mention I also ran "combo fix" and will attempt to post that log here. Hopefully it helps.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

    Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

    READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    You will note that we ask you to put ComboFix directly on your desktop, not in a folder on the desktop as you have it here:
    c:\documents and settings\N8\Desktop\Junk\ComboFix.exe

    and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
    Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Thank you for the warm welcome, and I apologize for not taking the time myself and scanning though my e-mail to read the protocol letter.

    I believe I have followed all the listed instructions although I have two items to report:

    The program "root repeal" which was recommended to run, would not. After clicking the "scan" button in the "files" tab it would read in the bottom left something similar to "Initializing" and below that it would say "scanning for hidden/locked files" however after roughly 2 hours of this I found the computer was simply locked up and would not respond. After a second attempt, and approximately 30 minute wait, it too failed to yield results.

    The other item is that a second program "MGtools" also seemed to stall. It would boot up in the command prompt and several pages of text would scroll before it hit a line of text reading "Hikjackthis.log (deflating 67%)" or something relatively close. The cursor would then drop one line below and stop. Although the system itself was not locked up, the program would not progress any further. Admittedly I only waited between 30-60 minutes before giving up on it.

    Besides that information, I'd report that the redirects are still occurring, as well as periodical pop-ups as new tabs in the "Firefox" browser.

    I am posting the logs that I do have below, and again thank you for your time and consideration.

    Check for the log and post it. It is probably still there.

    I am not seeing any malware in your logs.

    Please tell me what these are:
    C:\Documents and Settings\N8\Desktop\virus killers
    C:\Documents and Settings\N8\Local Settings\Application Data\rbcsch

    Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

    NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.

    * Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    * Under Main choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser

    * Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
    o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser

    * Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
    o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

    Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".

    Are you still having problems?

    I ran the program as requested, but the redirects are still occurring. As for the two files listed:

    C:\Documents and Settings\N8\Desktop\virus killers
    this is a file that contains shortcuts to several programs such as "malwarebytes" and "superantispyware" .

    C:\Documents and Settings\N8\Local Settings\Application Data\rbcsch
    This was an empty folder, even with hidden files displayed I found nothing inside.

    If it helps any, here are some redirects:
    "definable.com"
    "Ilovepuppies.com"
    "reznetnews.com"
    "ogloboonline.com"

    They all seem rather random, although firefox assigns them similiar icons in the history tab.

    I am sorry for the "bump" and willing accept the delay, but I have new information to relay. In an attempt to try and use safe mode my computer displayed a long list of what looked like file directories, and then gave me a blue screen. After a second try I've come to the conclusion that something in the computer is not allowing it to start in safe mode. What more I noticed for the first time when booting up it gives me a prompt to "choose my operating system" The options listed were similar to:

    Windows recovery console
    Windows xp profesional.

    This prompt has never come up before now.

    Try doing this:

    • Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l C:\TDSSKiller.txt -v

    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive called "TDSSKiller.txt" please copy and paste the contents in your next reply.

    Thanks again for the help; I have downloaded, and run the program. It asked for a reboot, which I performed, however the redirects continue. Here the log requested though, I hope it aids you.

    This new infection is hooking into a lot of things. The log indicated it found and cured a file in you nvidia drivers.

    Please re-run ComboFix and then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    I ran both programs as requested.

    Combofix once again required me to restart the computer, which I did. The log File follows.

    As before MGtools stalled at the same screen. I believe this is a new log, it was in the same location as the last one so I am unsure.

    Thank you for the continued support.

    You will need to tell me how things are running when we finish this hopefully last fix.

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    zaehzk

    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\GoogleUpdateTaskMachineUA.job
    C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\GoogleUpdateTaskUserS-1-5-21-1547161642-1078081533-839522115-1003UA.job
    C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\Google Software Updater.job
    C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\GoogleUpdateTaskUserS-1-5-21-1547161642-1078081533-839522115-1003Core.job
    C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\GoogleUpdateTaskMachineCore.job
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\ffoenpwf.sys

    FCopy::
    C:\MGtools\temp\XPSP2\beep.sysmg | C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\beep.sys
    C:\MGtools\temp\XPSP2\beep.sysmg | C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\beep.sys

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!
