Did the HSFIX reg file thing, then ran CWS Shredder (both in Safe Mode) CWS Shred didn't find anything. Rebooted in Normal Mode - IE still homes to About:Blank. Can get to other webpages at the moment, but this is the usual state after reboot.

Eiwdo didn't find anything either. This thing is really elusive. Any other suggestions? I appreciate all the time you've put into this thing.

Oh yeah, and here's a new HJT log (since Chaslang's ewido directions mention creating a new one). I noticed that RK1 value is back, even though we fixed it back a few steps ago.

I just finished reading thru all of this and I would have to say that there are no malware related infections on this PC to worry about. You do not and never did have an about:blank hijacker problem. You are just getting that page because you are having problems accessing sites at various time. As far as Spy Sweeper is concerned, I would say it is wrong (false positives).

I would suggest looking at any additional configuration settings for the browsers to make sure there are no problems. I would also suggest when you cannot access a URL to try using that sites IP address instead and see if that works. If it does, you may have DNS server related issues. You could also try disabling your firewall when this happens to see if some how it is blocking certain sites. Also check that sites are not added to the Restricted Zones.

    Chaslang -

Thanks for looking through everything - and thanks too to Bjgarrick for sticking with me through it all. I'm beginning to feel like a cyberchondriac since, though virus looking problems crop up on my computer, there isn't an actual infection. I hope I didn't take up too much of your time.

No problem! That's why we are all here.

Did you try flushing the DNS server yet when the problem occurs. Here how:

Click Start, Run, and enter ipconfig /flushdns and click OK! Now see if you can access the problem sites.

Also you should try using the IP address instead of the URL of the site to see if it makes any difference.
