I made the mistake of watching some pirated TV shows on an asian site emailed to me (cant remember its name). Now I have some nasty little bug. Whenever I open an explorer window it slows down until the CPU maxes out at 100%. I try to close the window and it takes several minutes to close. Then the teatimer process is running at 100% and I have to restart.

    Ive run:
    pandas root kit
    pandas spyware scan
    spybot
    adaware
    up to date symatec
    system restore is off
a tech guy at the University ran Malware and Adwatch

pandas spyware remover pulled out a bunch of cookies and that seemed to help but none of the above has found anything defined as malware

    Any other suggestions??

    Thanks

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this aother user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Thanks so much. The computer is running much better. But its still not at 100%. The pages still occasionally lose the internet connection (the page says it cant connect to "www.yahoo.com" for example and then when I refresh it seems to be fine. Other than that just a few problems with the CPU bumping up but it doesnt seem to be maxing out anymore (or at least not often). Please let me know if you see anything in the logs .

The only scan that I could tell found anything was Malware bytes. I couldnt run it in regular so I ran it in safe mode. It maxed out the CPU a few minutes into the first scan in safe mode. I shut off the computer and tried again in safe and it pulled out seven incidences of Rogue.BulletProofSpyware.

Again a big thanks for such useful advice!

I am assuming that you did have MBAM fix the things it found.

I still need the log from running C:\MGtools.exe --> C:\NGlogs.zip

I attempted to have MBAM fix the problem but didnt think it worked. I ran MBAM again and didnt find the files it detected the first time, and searched for the the name of the files and didnt find them. Please let me know if there is abetter way to double check.

As for the C:\NGlogs.zip, I may not have it. I couldnt get the MG to run on its own so I went in and started all the .exe files I could find. There isnt a NG directory on the C drive and when I searched for C:\NGlogs.zip it didnt find anything.

Is there a file I didnt execute or is this log somewhere I havent looked. It is not in the main MG file.

    Thanks again

I know you have it because of this from your HJT log:
    C:\MGtools\analyse.exe --- so you will have a C:\MGLogs.zip .

If you can not find it, then go to the C:\MGTool folder and double click C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file. (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\MGlogs.zip

I am not seeing any malware in your system. You should run CCleaner to clear out your temp folders.

    What issues are you having?

My CPU is still maxing out but for shorter periods of time. When it happens its either 100% on a single explorer page or 50% on two. ( or split between 3.....). My system is running MUCH! better but if there is a way to take care of this one last little glitch it would be great. The reason that Im thinking it may be some sort of malware is that this didnt before I downloaded the malware from the asian pirate TV site.

    Thanks

This could be merely just a software issue, but we can have you do an online scan and see what that shows:

    http://www.superantispyware.com/onlinescan.html

Reboot immediately after scanning if it finds and removes anything. Let me know if anything was found. It does not save a log.

Tim, thank you again for all your help. THe online scan didnt turn up anything. But in any event my computer is running much better. It is at lease useable now until I can buy a new one.

The last bit of info I can throw out the message that always comes up when a page is about to max out. If it tells you anything please let me know, if not, then thanks again.

That is not a malware issue. I suggest that you post in the software forum. You may need to install a different version of IE.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
