    I have an infected computer. I bought AVG business antivirus, but could not install it. I can get in som web pages, but some are blocked, example www.avg.com. So I used a USB to copy and run ccleaner and superantispyware. After I ran these 2 on reboot after win logo I get a black screen with the cursor on top. After a few reboots I realized if I use ALT+TAB I can see the taskbar and on the taskbar there is a jpeg there. If I right click this jpeg I can use close and the black screen closes and I can see my desktop. I can switch using ALT+TAB from this black screen to just being able to see the taskbar, so I know now this black screen is just an image that is covering all my desktop and I can close it. After I close it I use explorer to search for all jepg, but there is none in my hard drive. I search for hidden files, all foldres, etc. Nothing. It seems it is a jepg file created on startup, and deleted after, but I have not a clue as to which virus is creating it. Still unable so install AVG. Anyone heard of this virus? (smart one by the way) =(

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

    Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

    READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this aother user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

    Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Ok, dis as told, still having problems. One more thing, I get 2 options of operative s. on startup, both look the same, if I do not select the first one it will tell me it has no op sys. and of course the second option is the one that is selected. I can move using the arrows, though. I am attaching my logs. I have no av I still can't install avg

    I am going to assume that you had MBAM fix what it found.

    I still need the other logs:
    SAS
    ComboFIx
    C:\MGLogs.zip -- from running the C:\MGTools.exe.

    I am not sure I had fixed all mbam reported. I ran it again today and it still found 2 entries. Also I am not sure if combofix ran propperly the fist time, so I ran it again today. Here are the rest of the logs. Also when trying to run mbam today I got this message "mbam_program_error_updating(12007,0,winhttpSendRequest)"

    Why am I not seeing any traces of an AV program installed?

    You are missing a few files. But let's do this first:

    Now go to start / run / and type:
    sfc /scannow and have your XP install disc handy. Run it twice.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    NetSvc::
    wuyhvmwj

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\phwpgptj.dll

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{319e368e-2e5b-11e0-b2f3-001e90e1278d}]

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{371b08a7-c25c-11dd-b0a7-001e90e1278d}]

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{3d7d8c88-2d58-11e0-b2f2-001e90e1278d}]

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{4f0d69ef-b4df-11dd-b093-001e90e1278d}]

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{a4bd0882-4f55-11e0-b32b-001e90e1278d}]

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{b35347fd-50de-11e0-b330-001e90e1278d}]

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{bccfd80d-07aa-11e0-b2d1-001e90e1278d}]

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{d415df5b-40ff-11e0-b309-001e90e1278d}]

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{d415df60-40ff-11e0-b309-001e90e1278d}]

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{f9963852-0d50-11e0-b2d7-001e90e1278d}]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Services\wuyhvmwj]

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now uninstall thru Add/remove programs:
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6

    Reboot and download and install:
    Java Runtime 6

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).Make sure that you watch for the license agreement for TrendMicro HijackThis and click on the Accept button TWICE to accept ( yes twice ).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    It has taken me quite a while to follow instructions because I didnot have access to this computer for a few days. Anyway, I did as instructed, here are the files. I do not have antivirus because I cant install AVG which is the one I bought. It hangs midway on setup. I am also attaching 2 images of how my system is after booting. All I have to do is right click on the jpg image and close. I do not know how If you don't ALT-TAB all you get is a black screen, no startup bar, not nothing. Also before windows starts I get the option of chosing between 2 op systems, as if I had two op systems installed. If I let it run or click the first one windows won't boot, I have to select the second one.

    Did you do this:
    You are missing two system files:
    c:\windows\System32\wscntfy.exe ... is missing !!
    c:\windows\System32\regsvc.dll ... is missing !!

    c:\windows\regedit.exe . . . is infected!! And I am not seeing a good replacement file.

    Considering the issues you are having, and that you still have a malware item in your logs, I highly suggest that you backup your files and personal data and do a clean install.

    I do not have my XP install disc, so I did not do the sfc/scannow. Doing a clean install is going to be a problem, because I do not have any drivers and I don't think I am going to get them so easily because I can't even find the motherboard online, and also, as I mentines, I do not have the XP disc. This is a computer that has no manufacturer ( I do not know how to say this in english) it is not HP, nor Dell, etc. so it will not be easy to reinstall all the drivers. :cry Is there no other way?

    Can you borrow an XP CD of the same version as what you have? Do you have the install sticker for the authorization key? I take it this was a custom build? We may be able to fix you if you can find an XP CD.

    I borrowed a Win XP but it is Home, and mine is Pro. Yes, I have the sticker. Yes, this was a custom build. I will keep looking for a Win XP CD. In the meanwhile,can I copy those missing files from somewhere? Perhaps another computer and just copy paste? Or download them from microsoft.com or somewhere else?
